Mr. T. J- Echols, of Paulding
county, has become a prominent cit
ron of this place. From the acquain
tance, we think he is a gentleman.
John G. Maxwell paid the Town
Council twelve dollars ia four years,
as street tax* A. S. Gresham and A.
L. Gosline paid the same and Lem
Evans and Z K. Johnson each have
paid nine, making fifty-four dollars
street tax paid by five citizens who
live on Malone ftreet, in the last four
years. In that time, there has been
six days work done on that etre; t,at
75 cents per day, $1.50 worth. l>i-
vide, gentlemen, and work - all the
streets.
Henry Ward, our efficient sheriff,
has five prisoners in j dl-—one has
been convicted, an 1 is watting for
the penitentiary guards to co ne for
hjm, and four are awaiting trial by
the County Court. Sheriff Ward
says if the county don’t want to pay
for feeding prisoners, fog grand jury
must stop finding true bills, and the
officers must stop putting warrants
in his hands. He has;an idea, that
when he gets ho*d of a paper, he must
execute it, if it is legal, let the conse
quences be what th- y may.
One of our most upright and pub
lic-spirited eitiz ns called in our of
fice last week, and renewed his sub
scription to the Star, and said that
he paid out $20 a year for newspa
pers and magazines. Saeh m> n al
ways make good citizens. And yet,
there is a man in this place that does
not take a single newsp ip. r. He at
one tine took the Star, but stop
ped his paper because we di I not vote
for him for an office. Suouid such
men succeed, or not ?
Remarkable of a Southern
-M an u la ef o ry.
From an experimental beginning
several years ago, the J. P. Stevens
watch company, of Atlanta, has
grown to be one of the most impor
tant, industri 8 in Georgia. When
Mr. Stevtns first began, it was
thought impossible to bring to suc
cess an enterprise which required
such skilled labor and expensive
machinery, but in the face of unusual
obstac es they have advanced, step
by step, until the "Stevens Hatch”
is now a standard of ‘excellence
known all over the United Stales and
in tire hands of thousands of On
Southern people. They are said to
be the most remarkable tim -keepers
over placed into the market and
possessing improvements not to be
foiud upon any other .watch.
It is gratifying to us as Georgians,
to see an industry of this kind
mongst us, and a generous Soul he - n
patronage should make this as well
known as any in the world. Mr.
Stevens informs us that the jewelers
over-the. South are giving the pre
ference teptfis watch, and the pom-
•psiry is even ,now behind with ‘ itf
orders.
Tas STotice
Dougl asville has two -citizens that
we know of. who would g’ory in the
downfall of the Star. Well you -ray
talk and say what you please, we are
here to stay. We c in live without
the patronage of those two men ;’,hcy
have never paid us a single cent and
we don’t expect them to. There are
enough good people in this place
and in this county, who know that a
newspaper is the liteof the county,
and they support one too. We mean
it.
Our enterprising merchants will
soon be getting in their .mammoth
spring stocks, - And right here we
1 pause to say : Many a young lady
suffering from blighted affection, and
a resolution to crawl off to one side
and try to die, has been snatched, as
it were, from the brink of an uniime-
ly grave by seeing, in a newspaper,
the announcement of “Spring ads.”

In our issue of week before la-t,
we spoke of James Evans, a jail bird
skipping out ffiom'sheriff ward,and
made the predieti tn that if he stayed
out of the “Mountains of Hepddam,*
Ifenry would get him. Sheriff Ward
immediately placed himself in cor
respondence witli various officers in
surrounding counties, mi l within a
very few days constabb , J. E. Co.bb
