JESUS FEEDING THE flTVF. THOUSAND.
John vi, 1-21. Golden Text, John vi,35. Time,
A D. 29, in April. ITaee, the plain of Butaiha,
on tlie N. L side of the. Sea of Galile.
Nearly ayear has passed since our last lesson-.
a year which has been f uUlof wonderful events
in the life of onr Lord and those with whom He
came in contact... Crowds daily gathered to hear
Him speak an d they continually brought their
sick and disabled to Him for healing. With (
nis disciples He took a boat and went over the I
C -ililean lake to a spot which was uninhabited
‘ d muely, that He might the more easily hear
His disciples tell the Story of their recent mis
sionary work, and that He Himself might have
needed rest. His movements were watched and
„ His arrival He found a large concourse of
neopie waiting for Him. As His boat drew
L a r the shore He could see the grassy slopes
covered with people who had followed Him.
vassing amongst them, He healed their siek with
w ord or a touch divine, and then seating Him
self He taught them of those higher spiritual
truth, Which He came to teach and (lied to seal.
Toward the close of day His disciples became
anxious on account of thereheing. such a jafffd
crowd, 5,000 men besides .women and cbildien,
out in that lonely place without food. They
wanted Christ to send-them away so that, they
mtght go to the neighboring • villages and buy
fomi for themselves. But He told His disciples
that they must feed the multitude. An inven
tory of their stock of food revealed five barley
loaves and two small dried or pickled fishes.
Thev tell the story, of the large quantity requir
ed and their own inability to fill it, to Christ,
who at once gives orders to have the people
seated in companies of fifties and hundreds,
liras sitting in companies, their richly colored 1
Oriental costumes bright in the glow of the set-
t iua sun, make a picture which reminded Mark
of a flower garden, and he describes thbm as
sitting in ranks, of literally, garden plats. Then
lesus took the loaves and the fishes and blesset
them and gave to His disciples and they gave to
ae multitude and when theyh ad ail eaten e-
