Miss Van Zandt says that in marry
ing the Anarchist, Spies* she followed
the vole s of her heort, and she thinks
that good people all over the country
ought to applaud her. She says
“Had I married an old invalid deb
auchee avtth great riches chose ‘moral
gentlemen who assail me now would
have landed me to the skies, and many
of my Christian sisters and brethren
would h ave said to their sons and
daughters,, .very commendable; a
sensible girl,’and those who know me
persohs,lly.‘I have always thought her
so sweet.’ I prefer the censure of those
‘moral’ people, wlm. it seems, cannot
comprehend a love match, doubly
strong by a similarity of mental tastes
and pursuits as ours is, to their appro
val.” Miss Van Zandt makes the mis
take of supposing that her choice was
limited to Spies and “an old invalid
debauchee with great riches.” It is
even within the bounds of probability
however, that she will wish that she
had waited§for’the'_debauchee.

A considerable sensation has been
riated at the Virginia Military
aititute here and in this section by a
-•markable phenomenon, or optical
illusion, or whatever it may be called,
uwliich those who witnessed the sight
insist they discovered a wonderful
likeness to Cen. Stonewall Jackson
i,i the strarigs visitant. At the break
ing out of the war that officer was a
professor in this institute. The
following statement is given by James
Hilton, a well known citizen of this
place: “1 send you a thrilling and true
account ofa ghost which has recently
vppeared at the Virginia Military
Institute. On the night of. the 28th,

two large forty six pound siege guns
there appeared a soldier/'dressed Hi
Confederate uniform and mounted on
a large gray horse. His sword was
drawn, his horse tightly reigned up
and two white plumes floated graceful
ly above his head. The sentinel,at first
almost paralyzed with terror, had
gazed upon the object but an instant,
when it started through the sallyport
into the courtyard at a round trot,
crossing the sentinel’s beat and making 0l1
an audible sound, although he was
passing over a solid brick pavement.
The sentinel challenged, with a loud,
voice, “Who goes there ?” The rider
did not heed him, but passed on at tb
same and impassable^irecip.ice at the
rear of the barracks he vanished. The
sentinel promptly called his corporal,
who informed thelieuteriantoftheguard
and the officer of the day. The guard
wao immediately turned out and
though a close and minute search was
instituted no trace of horse or rider
could be found.
On the next night a similar phenome
non was witnessed by a party of cadets
and citizens; This time a sentinel was
stationed in the centre of the sallyport
to await the reappearance of the horse
and rider. At the same time as on the
night before, preceded by the ; same
sound, the horse and rider appear,d
and started through the sallyport at a

A ’I.UCKY WOMAN.
For weeks past some one has been
robbing the residence of Mrs. Anna
P. Shackleford, of Pleasant Hill, A..a.,
but when and how was a mystery. On
the evening of the 26th ull., Mis.
Shackleford was in her room engaged
in writing, when her attention was
directed to some one working at her
window from the front portico. She
hastily snatched up a pistol from a ta

With a savage oath the burly negre
sprang at Mrs. S. catching her by one
of her hands, while in his other hand
he held an open knife. He made a
determined effort to cut the throat of
Mrs. Shackleford. He cut through
her dress, burying the blade in her
left dreast, the cut being three inches
in length and one inch deep. Two
wounds were inflicted , on the arm and
one in the hand.
As he raised the knife for the fourth
time plucky Mrs.'Shackleford succeed
ed in freeing her hand from his grasp,
and quick as a flash of lightning she
struck him a-blow on the temple with
the butt end of the pistol, which caused
him to reel; two other well directed
blows felled him to the floor. Just
beyond him on a table was a loaded

seen. She
when he rose from
the floor and dashed through the win
dow just as a ball came in close prox
imity to his head. He ran like “Maud
8” to escape.
Mrs. Shackleford had a few moments
before came up from her plantation on
horse back; and .badly cut as she was
abd bleeding fearfully, she quickly
mounted ger steed and rode along at a
rapid rate. As she caine within shoot
ing range of the fleeing negro, she
fired, the balLhitting him in the leg
and bringing him down. She was up
on him almost simultaneously with
his fall, aud stood over him with cock
ed pistol for three quarters of an hour,
until she secured the services of three
gentlemen, who carried him to jail.
Mrs. Shackleford is getting along
well, although her nerves were slight-'
ly shook up. But she is a lady of ex
traordinary power. She manages a
large plantation, and takes Care of her
mother, who is blind, her father, an
invalid and 94 years of age, and her
lit tie boy. She is a woman that Ala
bama and the South should feel proud
of -
000,000, the greater part of which w
be required very soon after the bill is
passed.
There is still hope that the president
will veto the dependent pensions bill,
aud that Congress will not pass tilt
bill removing the limit from the ar
rears act. 1 Both parties, , however,
voted for the bill which now awaits
his signature, and if he proposes to do
wliat he thinks will be tor the best
interests of his, party he may make the
mistake of signing it.
It is-safe to say that neither party in
Congress thinks the bill a jnst oi e.
The Republicans proposed it, hoping
the Democrats would defi at it, and
thereby lose popularity with the so.-
dier element. The Democrats were
afraid to oppose it for party reasons.
The .Northern Democrats, particular
ly, felt that to vote against it would be
to vote for their own defeat. Unless,
therefore, the President has the coui-
age to vote it, the Democratic parly
will have the credit oi saddling a bur
den of abo ut 175,000,000 a year on the
country.
If this bill becomes a law the num
ber of our pensioners will be nearly
double the number of soldiers in the
German army, and the burden impos
es! upon the country to support them
will be a tuird greater than the Ger
man army imposes upon Germany. If,
in addition to this bill, He' ator Ingalls
gets the bill removed tiie limits from
the arrears act passed, there will not
be much occasion for talking about
reducing the revenue. There will not
ho enough surplus revenue to begin
the work of fortifying the cost or to
build a navy. - '
The North will get nearly all the
benefit of this outrageous pension leg
islation because the money is distribu
ted there. It almost alone; also, is
benefited by the present high tariff,
because the great monopolies which
protection has built up are theie. life
South, which has to contribute a very
large share of tlie pensiou money, gets
little or no benefit from the tariff, and
is not made any richer by the millions
distributed in pensions. And, not
withstanding this bad treatment, it
cannot get a small pittance to open its
harbors to commerce.
