Americanisms.
“Let me win the races of a country,
and I care not who sells the pools.”—
Jim Keene.
A Westurn man though*, that the
‘'malarious flats” of Washington were
politicians.
None of the theories in the Jennie
Cramer case are reasonable except
thoee which inolndes the Malley factors.
A company of New Hampshire mili¬
tia is called the Head Guards. The
members are probably armed with fine
combs.
“If Jones undertakes to pull my
ears,” said a load-spoken full.” yonng Those man,
“he’ll just have bis hands

smiled.
“I declare,” said Julia, “you take
the words right oat of my mouth.”
“No wonder; they are so sweet,” said
Henry. The day was set that even¬

A beautiful boy: There’s a woman
in Uperten avenue with a son whose

back to his head with little pieces of

Advice to play-goers: Asj the play
proceeds make “How^he sundry mouths.” audible “Posi¬ excla¬

“The part is too heavy for him.”
“Miserable, miserable,” The people

Self-Control.
One of tbe beet means of cull urn ia
the persistent withdrawing of the
mind from the motion and concentrat¬
ing it elsewhere. The man otjn oman
who persistently permits his mi ind to
dwell on disagreeable themes only
spites him or herself. Children of
course have less self-control, hence pa¬
rents most help them to torn their at¬
tention from that which excites them to
something else, but adults when they not
like children they ought to be aehamed
of themselves. The value of sel-fcon
trol as a hygienic agent is very great.
It prevents great waste of vitality in
feeling, emotion and passion. It helps
to give one a mastery over pain and
distress.
Marvin Among the Rats.—T he
distinguished Marvin, who was sent
to the penitentiary Wednesday evening
-to serve out a term of ten years, was
put in “Solitude,” a place in which
every conviet has to pass hie first night
in the penitentiary. “Solitude ia a
very daik place—after the order cf a
dungeon—aud naturally more than one
rat runs about the room during the
midnight hours. Yesterday morning
Marvin, in relatiug his experience in
“Solitude” to an officer, said in that
stuttering, stammering way peculiar
to himself: “There e-e-e-m-e-d to be
l-o-t-s of r-a-t-e-s in there, o-n-e put
his f-f-o*o-t in my m-m-o-n-i-h .—Rich
mond Whig.
The philosopher of the New Yotk
Times has been turning his attention
to this unpleasant, but necessary fea¬
ture ot camp life: “It is remarkable,”
ho says, “with what eagerness men
will assume every camp duty
that of dish washing. Be who has
never cooked before will volunteer to
cook an intricate breakfast or an ab¬
struse dinner, solely in order that he
may be relieved of washing the dishes.
W hen You Have
au inflamed eye, a swelled hand, to
decayed and aching tooth, you do not
take and fill your stomach with drugs
to euro it, but apply a cooling lotion cr
some soothing narcotic have directly to the
parts. So if you a weak or lame
back, sore kidneys, profuse or scanty
urine, or the secretory system is clogged
and inactive, you should use Prof.
Gnilmette’s French Kidney Pad, which
ia a directly local application, which
always gives speedy relief and always
cures the disease. Ask your druggist
for it.
