Giving dictionaries to elementary school students
was just the beginning of Rotary’s incentive pro
gram emphasizing literacy in Madison County.
The club started this project about three years ago.
Then last year it added the Ferst Foundation read
ing incentive that gives books, once per month, to
children in Madison County from the time they are
born to the time they begin school. This year, the
club began a third part of their literacy program.
Having addressed pre-school reading needs and
elementary school needs, Rotarians moved on to
encouraging middle school needs. Club members
Ellen Cowne and Jerry Coutant presented a check
for $150 to the media specialist, Linda Drewry,
this week to be used for gift certificates to the
book fair. These certificates will be given to stu
dents who have read the most books. The students
receiving these gift certificates are: Rheannon
Wheeler, Charles Goldman, Amber Pope, Hannah
Marotte, Hayden Bailey, Wendy Cress, Jackeline
Jovel, Kayla Hill, Emili Sarver, Cody Jones, Haley
Seay, Kathryn Yeary, Daniel Harwood, Emily Smith
and Caitlin Felt.
