Athens man arrested after chase
An Athens man was arrested
last week after leading officers
from three agencies on a foot
chase and air search following
a traffic stop just inside the
Athens-Clarke County line.
David Michael Brightwell,
36, 117 Firewood Street,
was arrested on a long list of
charges, including aggravated
assault, speeding, obstruction
of an officer, fleeing or attempt
ing to elude a police officer,
no insurance, affixing license
plate with intent to conceal,
expired vehicle tag or decal,
driving while license with
drawn suspended or revoked
and giving false information or
false name.
According to the incident
report, Madison County dep
uty Tommy Williams met a
vehicle southbound on Hwy.
106 just north of Sanford Road
traveling at a high rate of speed.
Williams’ radar showed the
maroon Oldsmobile Cutlass
was traveling 83 mph in a 55
mph zone.
Williams noted the car had
a busted headlight which
matched a look out that had
just been given on a possible
burglary in progress. Williams
attempted to stop the vehicle,
but the driver (Brightwell) con
tinued on into Clarke County,
finally pulling over in front of
the Exxon package station on
Hwy. 29 South near Athens
Christian School.
Williams noted the driver
acted very nervous and when
asked for his license, said he
had left it at home. He then
identified himself as “Ricky
Smith” with a birth date of
Sept. 27, 1967, making him
42, though he said his age was
38. When questioned about the
busted headlight, Brightwell
became upset, saying he had
borrowed the car from his
boss. After walking around to
look at the light he reportedly
charged past deputy Williams
and fled the scene. Williams
started to pursue, until he
noticed that a female passen
ger in the car was attempting
to move into the driver’s seat.
At that point, Williams stopped
the foot chase and went to
secure the female and the vehi
cle. Lt. Burl Johnson arrived
and attempted to pursue the
driver on foot but lost him in
thick brush.
Clarke County officers and
the Georgia State Patrol assisted
the search using the GSP heli
copter and located Brightwell
hiding in a woody brush area.
The suspect was returned to
the scene and released into
Deputy Williams’ custody for
transport to the jail.

Home destroyed by
fire on Fred Goss Road
A home belonging to Howard Goss on Fred Goss Road was com
pletely destroyed by fire Sunday night.
According to E-911 director David Camp, a neighbor called 911
after spotting flames across the road from her house, Danielsville
Volunteer Fire Department responded to tire scene, along with back
up from Colbert, Collins, and Comer fire departments.
According to Danielsville fire chief Marc Perry, the house was
fully involved when firefighters arrived on scene around 8:22 p.m.
No one was apparently at home when the fire started.
The Red Cross was summoned and the fire marshal and the sher
iff's office were also called in to investigate. Chief Perry said this is
routine in cases where newer structures are involved in a fire, but that
no foul play is suspected.

Colbert man arrested
following wreck
A Colbert man was arrested last week after he reportedly
missed a curve and drove through the yard of a home on
Helican Springs Road, striking and damaging a concrete
drainage culvert in the driveway.
Rodney Wade Baker, 47,756 Timber Ridge, was charged at
the scene with DUI, failure to maintain a lane, habitual viola
tor DUI, expired vehicle tag or decal, driving while license
withdrawn, suspended or revoked and open container in vehi
cle, also the following “bondsman off bond” charges were
filed: possession, manufacture, distribution, etc. VGCSA
possession of methamphetamine, possession of cocaine, two
counts of possession of tools for the commission of a crime,
person convicted/indicted for certain offenses, possession of
explosives, two counts of possession manufacture distribu
tion, etc. VGCSA cocaine and open container.
According to the incident report, Deputy Gary Floyd
responded to a wreck call at 970 Helican Springs Road where
he found EMS workers already on scene attending to a com
bative Baker, who appeared to be in a “state of intoxication”
with slurred speech and a heavy odor of alcohol. An EMS
worker told deputy Floyd that he saw Baker exit the wrecked
truck from the driver’s side and walk behind a trailer at the
residence. EMS personnel coaxed him back to the vehicle,
but he attempted to flee when he heard law enforcement was
coming to the scene. Baker allegedly told Floyd he was not
the driver but could not remember who was driving the track.
The deputy noted that there were tools and debris in the pas
senger seat, indicating there was no passenger at the time
of the wreck. An open beer container was also found in the
vehicle. EMS cleared Baker for transport to the jail.
