ROTARY CONSTRUCTS RAMP
The Rotary Club of Madison County ventured outside the county last Thursday to construct
a much-needed ramp for Jan Wilbanks, who lives in Jackson County. Wilbanks is 64 and has
had Rheumatoid Arthritis for the last 25 years. “It has left her crippled in body, but certainly
not in sprit,” Rotary leaders said. She is l/8th Native American of Cherokee descent, and is
not only a craft person, but also an artist. She loves to go outside and sit on her porch and
watch the birds and flowers. Her health problems has been so severe that she has been
unable to go outside her house since the first of December. The Rotary Club constructed
her a 24-foot ramp, and also a six-foot ramp to get from the house to the porch. When it was
completed, she walked up and down the ramp several times, holding on to the side rails,
saying, “You all don’t have any idea how much this means to me. It is better than the last five
Christmas gifts put together.” Workers on the ramp included Bob Padilla, Alton Rowe, Jerry
Coutant, Jerry Bond, Pat Quinn, Artry Bishop, Jack Chandler, James Adams, Roy Gandy,
Jim Jeffer and Tim Sweat from Jackson EMC.
