State offering free
online SAT course
Georgia is offering high school
students free access to the SAT
online prep course developed by
the College Board, the group that
administers the SAT.
The online course gives students
access to virtual preparation
exercises, review quizzes and
several practice tests. The practice
quizzes and tests, including the
essay portion, are scored and
feedback is given directly to the
student.
The free SAT Online Prep
Course is open to all Georgia high
school students - public, private
and home-schooled.
Among Georgia’s 2008
graduating seniors, the students
who used the free SAT Prep Course
scored significantly better on all
portions of the important college
entrance exam, according to the
state department of education.
On average, students who used
the online course scored a total of
48 points higher than those who
didn’t use the program.
Public school students should
visit their guidance office to ask
for a card that has an access code
for the course.
Private school and home-
schooled students should go
to the Georgia Department of
Education’s website to register.

Kindergarten
registration dates
announced
Registration for kindergarten
students for the 2009-2010 school
year will take place on Thursday,
March 19 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and
Friday, March 20, from 8 a.m.^1
p.m. AH children who will be five
years old by Sept. 1,2009, should be
registered at this time, school officials
said. Parents should bring their child
and following documentation to
the registration: the child’s Social
Security number, birth certificate,
immunization record and proof of
residency in the school district where
they are being registered.
Beginning on Tuesday, March
2, parents should call the school
their child will attend to make an
appointment to register. Parents with
questions may call Carol Barnes at
706-795-2191 ext. 1405.
MCHS presenting
‘Secrets Every Smart
Traveler Should
Know’
The Madison County choral
department, under the direction
of Shirley Dillard, will present
the musical "Secrets Every Smart
Traveler Should Know’’ Friday
and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, at 7 p.m.
and Sunday. Feb. 22. at 3 p.m. in
the Madison County High School
theater. The production is by
special arrangement with Music
Theatre International (MTI). New
York, N.Y. Tickets are $6 at the
door.
Georgia Municipal
Association
sponsoring ‘If I were
mayor’ contest
The Georgia Municipal
Association asks sixth graders to
write an essay on what changes they
would make as mayor of their city.
Essays must address the subject
with the first sentence beginning,
"If I were mayor, I would for a
chance to win a $250 savings bond
and other prizes.
The GMA selects a winner for
each of the state’s 12 districts. The
winners, along with their parents
and teachers, will be recognized at
a luncheon in April in Atlanta.
Students can obtain entry forms
from their teachers. Mail entries

30303. Essays must by received by
the GMA by March 6. Submissions
must not exceed 350 words.
MCHS class of ^9
hosting
reunion Aug. 8
The MCHS Class of ’99 will
hold its 10-year reunion, Saturday,
Aug. 8, at 6 p.m at Camp Kiwanis
in Danielsville.
Tickets are $35 per person.

MADISON COUNTY FFA HOLDS ‘BOWLING NIGHT’
The three Madison County FFA Chapters recently had a joint after school Bowling Night
social to encourage students to join FFA, get involved with FFA and help students from
the different chapters get to know each other. Two busloads of students traveled Jan.
27 to Showtime Bowl in Athens. Each student had the opportunity to bowl at least two
games for a FFA Discount and then was served free pizza and drinks from Fox’s Pizza
in Danielsville sponsored by the FFA Alumni. There were over 80 FFA members present
at the joint social. Students interested in joining FFA can contact one of the five FFA
Advisors: Jerry Taylor, Kay Farmer and Cindy Jones at the high school, Trisha Lastly at
the Freshman Academy and Sara Hughes at the middle school. Pictured are Freshman

Teams recently competed in
the Area II FFA Farm Business
Kim Chandler, of the Madison
County Future Farmers of
America, won “Senior’’ in the
showmanship competition at the
Jackson Electric Membership
Corporation's 40th Annual
Quality Beef Show Feb. 7.
Chandler was among 76 young
people from FFA and 4-H clubs
from six Northeast Georgia coun
ties who gathered to compete for
awards, ribbons and cash prizes at
the JEMC show.
Together, they entered 121 ani
mals in the competition held at the
Jackson County Comprehensive
High School Livestock Center.
Young people competing in the
Quality Beef Show use the expe
rience and judge’s feedback to
help prepare for the upcoming
statewide competition in Perry.
‘There is no entry fee for this
competition,” said Randall Pugh,
Jackson EMC President/CEO.
‘The kids have the opportunity to
win prizes and get pointers from
the judge to help them improve
their animals and skills, so every
one comes out a winner.”

Students must take a 50-ques-
tion multiple choice test that is

Beef Show to honor the con
tribution the agriculture industry
makes to Northeast Georgia’s
economy, as well as to encourage
leadership skills and a competi
tive spirit among the area's young
people.
A not-for-profit electric coop
erative, Jackson EMC was orga
nized by area residents in 1938
to bring power to a then-rural
area. Now, the largest electric
cooperative in Georgia and one
of the largest in the United States,
Jackson EMC provides electric
and other services to more than
204,000 members in Banks,
Barrow, Clarke, Gwinnett, Hall,
Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison,
Franklin and Oglethorpe coun
ties.

The Madison County
Freshman Academy Agriculture
Communications Team recently
competed in the Area U FFA
Agriculture Communications
Career Development Event
(CDE) at the new Madison
County Middle School in Comer
on Feb. 5.
Agriculture Communication
CDE Team members are from
the Freshman Academy FFA
Chapter included: Garrett
Whitworth, Alex McLaughlin,
Jade Andrews, Courtney Phillips
and Matt Pieper.
The Agriculture
Communications Career
Development Event develops stu
dents’ skills in editing and com
munication. The editing exer
cise is the first part of the CDE.
Because editing is a critical skill
for all communicators, each team
member completed an editing
exercise. Students were given a
printed document that contained
25 mistakes.
In correcting the mistakes, team
members will be required to use
correct proofreader’s marks (see
Associated Press Stylebook and
Libel Manual). Style, grammar,
punctuation and spelling mis
takes will be included. Then, after
the editing exercise, the students
had to complete a communica
tions quiz. Each team member
completed a quiz that cover basic
elements important to the skill
areas of journalistic writing and
graphic design. Five questions
were written for each segment,
which included broadcast, public
relations, news, visuals and ethics
of communication.
The Madison County Middle
School FFA Chapter and its
members hosted this event and
many others on Feb. 5. Some
