Board of Education still undecided about well option
By Ben Munro
ben@mainstreetne ws .com
The Madison County Board
of Education (BOE) is still
mulling its options on how
to most cost-effectively sup
ply water to the middle school
athletic fields.
The school board has twice
tabled a recommendation from
Superintendent Mitch McGhee
to enter into an agreement for
use of a private well to irrigate
the fields.
Originally proposed at the
BOE’s Feb. 10 meeting, the
agreement was tabled by the
school board to allow for more
review time.
The BOE again delayed
action on the agreement Feb.
23 and asked McGhee to
inquire about IDA rates for
pre-treated water to irrigate the
fields.
School board chairman Jim
Patton is reluctant to have the
system pay the costs associated
with the private well, noting
$27,000 to furnish the piping
and the pump.
“That’s equivalent to a first-
year teacher,” Patton said last
week. “And at a time that we're
having to look at eliminating
positions, which means we’re
increasing class sizes or drop
ping the number of classes we
can offer. I’m not willing to
spend the money. I'm willing
to spend the money to keep the
grass alive but not to make it
flourish.”
McGhee said he’d discuss
pre-treated water option with
Marvin White of the IDA.

VA benefits
are tax exempt
Georgia Commissioner of Veteran Affairs
Pete Wheeler wants to remind all veterans and
their dependents that benefits paid under any
law administered by the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs are tax exempt.
“This is especially helpful for those veterans
and their dependents living on fixed incomes,"
Wheeler said in a press release.
Tax-exempt veteran affairs benefits include
disability compensation and pension payments
paid either to veterans or their families;
education, training and subsistence allowances;
grants for homes designated for wheelchair
living; grants for motor vehicles for veterans
who lost their sight or use of their limbs; GI
insurance dividends paid to either veterans or
their beneficiaries; and interest on dividends
left on deposit with the VA. Wheeler said
interest accumulated on money from VA
benefits deposited into any type of interest-
bearing account may be taxable. He encourages
veterans with questions relating to these tax
issues and other tax matters to consult a tax
advisor. Taxpayers can also receive assistance by
contacting the IRS weekdays at 1-800-829-1040
between 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. or at www.
irs.gov. IRS Publication 525, “Taxable and
Nontaxable Income,” has a section devoted to
veterans’ income. Call 1-800-829-3676 to order
the publication.
