Former students of the old
Carlton High School gathered
for the first time since 1984 last
month at the Ila Restaurant for
a meal, fellowship and to remi
nisce about the town, and the
school, that shaped their lives.
There were 90 people pres
ent, including students and their
family members, and a former
principal, Clyde Fitzpatrick.
Former students Hollis
Winn, Betty Sweeny, Sam
Glenn, Allen Glenn and Guy
Thomson were the board mem
bers responsible for putting the
reunion together.
J.E. Sherrer (Class of 1940)
took the lead in regaling his
fellow alumni and classmates
with memories of antics and
“innocent fun” he and his pals
got into during their school
days in Carlton. Sherrer also
remembered that school began
each day with a Bible read
ing, prayer and the Pledge of
Allegiance.
Sherrer acknowledged the
four other members of his grad
uating class who were present
for the reunion, and told them
tearfully, “I am blessed to be
with you all one more time.”
Alice Cooper Stallings
recalled a field trip her class
took to Atlanta on a school bus
driven by Dewey Threlkeld.
The trip cost each student
$2.10 (the 10 cents was for
the trolley). While there they
visited the Georgia Crackers
baseball field. Stone Mountain,
the Sears Roebuck building
(heretofore only known as a
catalog to most students) and
the State Capitol.
“My eyes stood out on stems
for weeks after seeing all those
things,” Stallings said.
The oldest former stu
dent present was Annie Sue
McCarty, 98, who graduated
from Carlton High School in
1932.
Rev. Dewight Duhan, pastor
of Carlton Baptist Church sang
a song he wrote about Carlton,
entitled “Carlton G-A.” The
final line of the songs says “It's
a very quiet town - except for
the train.”
SCHOOL HISTORY
Carlton High School opened
in 1892 in a wooden structure.
There were 10 grades during
those first years, taught by two
teachers; Miss Edith White
taught first through fifth grades,
while Miss Maude Rhodes
taught sixth through tenth,
according to a school history
written by Martha Whitehead
Moore for the 1984 reunion.
The oldest school records
located at the board of educa
tion in Danielsville were dated
1896 and contained a list of 40
pupils.
“The last names sounded
very familiar - probably some
were parents and grandparents
of people living in Carlton
now,” Whitehead wrote.
The wooden school build
ing was tom down in 1911
to make way for a red brick
structure. In 1920, an eleventh
grade was added to the school
and the four members of that
graduating class were: Freida
Martin, Elizabeth Stevens,
Walter Stevens and Martha
Whitehead. Their teacher was
Mrs. Frances Fleming Long.
Members of the last gradu
ating class of Carlton High
School in 1946 were Jimmy
Joe Martin, Johnnie Paul,
Hollis Winn, W. L. Mathews,
Miriam Dudley, Mary Ruth
Aiken, Ida Merle Threlkeld
and Mauline Smith.
Following this graduation,
pupils in the eighth through the
11 th grades were sent to Comer
High School to complete their
education, while first through
seventh grades continued to be
taught in Carlton until 1953. In
the fall of that year, the school
was closed after two weeks due
to the small enrollment. The
remaining students, along with
their teachers, were transferred
to Comer.
A second history written for
the 1984 reunion by Louise
Stevens Seymour, noted that it
was the custom of the county
following consolidation in the
mid 1950s to sell the vari
ous country school buildings
and grounds to a church or
civic organization for one dol
lar. Carlton Baptist Church
bought Carlton High School
for that amount and utilized
it for Sunday School classes
until a new annex was built.
Eventually the building was
sold to a company that disman
tled it to salvage the brick and
the grounds were made into
a church parking lot. School
School newspaper
Former Carlton High School student Betty Sweeny
holds up a school newspaper from 1940 diming the
Carlton High School reunion held recently at the Ila
Restaurant. There were five members of that class
present for this reunion.
Lifelong friends
Thomas Thompson (L) “chastises” former classmate
and pal J.D. Sherrer about some of the schoolboy
antics they were “allegedly” involved in while grow
ing up in Carlton.
furniture and equipment were
sold to the public, Seymour
noted.
“Many of the former pupils
wanted to buy their old desk
with their initials carved on
it,” she wrote. Valerie and Guy
Porterfield bought Carlton’s
old school bell and later passed
it along to another former stu
dent, Martha Power.
“(But) more important than
the souvenirs bought at the
school sale are the lasting
friendships of the pupils who
attended the Carlton School,”
Seymour concluded in her his
tory.
