he was the son of James
Calvin Mayhue and the

Mayhue. Mr.
Mayhue was retired from
the United States Army.
He loved his family, was
an avid gardener, and loved
building bird houses.
Survivors include his

County, he was the son of
the late James Redden and
Annie Eva Sharp Morris.
He was
retired from
the United
States Postal
Service and was retired
from the United States Air
Force, where he served
during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Morris was preceded
in death by sisters, Marie
Morris and Lucille Morris;
sister and brother-in-law,
Katie and Bill Toney;
brothers, C.B. Morris and
Johnny Morris; sister-in-
law, Agnes Morris; and
brother-in-law, Jowett
Logan.
Survivors include his
wife of 57 years, Rebecca

CPO Rayge Blaton Payne,
83, died Thursday, June 18,
2009, at a private health
care facility.
Born on February 3,
1926, in Cornelia, he was
the son of the late Lemuel
U. and Tressie Morris
Payne. He was a member
of Pleasant
Hill Baptist ~
Church, and —
was retired
from the United States
Navy after serving faith
fully for 24 years in active
service, including World
War II, and six years in
the reserves. He earned
numerous medals and
earned rank of Chief Petty
Officer. Mr. Payne was pre
ceded in death by sisters,
Altia Gibson and Montine
Chambers; and brothers,
Bunyon Payne and Charles
Payne.
Survivors include his
wife, Doris Suggs Payne,
Cornelia; daughter and
son-in-law, Rosemary and
Wayne Dail, Commerce;
sons and daughters-in-
law, Dale and Debbie
Payne, Goose Creek, S.C.,

1959, in Barrow County,
he was the son of Ann
Allen Prosser of Jefferson

self-employed painter.
Survivors include his

following a lengthy battle
with Alzheimers.
She was the daughter
of the late Joseph Dayton
and Fannie Power Jones.
She was a homemaker, a
successful Avon represen
tative for 30 years, and a
member of the Bold Spring
United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Varner was preceded
in death by her husband,
Dwight R. Varner; daugh
ter, Judy V. Hambrick;
grandson, Paul Varner;
brothers, Maurice, Lovic,
and Wilton Jones; and a
sister, Jewell Varner.
Survivors include a

JEFFERSON-Winfield
W. Ward III “Buz”, 59,
died Saturday, June 20,
2009.
Born in Detroit, Wayne
County, Mich., on
November 9, 1949, he was
the son of the late Winfield
Webb Ward II and Louise
Newton Ward. He was pre
ceded in death by a sister,
Jeanne W. Sauban; and
brother-in-law, Martin L.
Johnson.
Buz spent 30 years in
the music industry, travel
ling the world and making
friends wherever he went.
He settled in Jefferson in
2003, in his ideal home,
an antique in a small town.
He is considered the coun
ty historian and advocate
for preserving the history
of Jefferson, most recently
serving as vice chair of the
Jackson County Historic
Restoration Committee and
the Chair of the Jefferson
Historic Preservation
Commission. True heroes,
like Buz, strive and labor
daily in anonymity against
the world’s inequities as
we spectators watch safely
from the bleachers, loved
ones stated.

brothers, John F. Ward,

in the Army
