Crime and court policy
It is the policy of this newspaper to print the names of all persons
arrested and booked through the Madison County Jail. No exceptions
are made to that policy.
This newspaper also routinely publishes the names of those involved
in criminal court cases as those actions make their way through the
judicial system, including the final disposition of the case when it is
known.
We caution our readers, however, that an arrest is not a conviction
and an individual is presumed innocent under the law until convicted
of a crime for which he has been charged.
In addition to arrest reports, we also routinely publish items from
incident reports filed with local law enforcement agencies. Most of the
time, the names of those involved are not published unless one party
has been officially charged with a crime.

Puppy apparently
wasn’t stabbed
A puncture wound that claimed the life of a puppy in Hull
recently appears to have been made by another animal, not a
knife as originally suspected.
A deputy responded to a Williams Wilson Road call of ani
mal cruelty and found a six-month old daschund puppy with
a puncture wound behind his right ear. The deputy noted
in his incident report that the dog appeared to have been
stabbed. The report noted that there was no blood leading
into or out of the garage and that the dog appeared to have
been killed there.
The dog’s owner suspected that a neighbor, with whom
he has had previous disputes, killed the dog. But the owner
took the dog to the University of Georgia Vet Clinic for
evaluation.
“They had a necropsy done and it told them that another
animal, a coyote or dog, had done it,” said Sheriff Kip
Thomas.
Woman assaulted
by boyfriend on
Old Elberton Road
Aggravated battery was reported on Hwy. 72 West last week when a
Hull woman reported that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend.
According to the incident report, the woman told deputy Jeff
Strickland that she went to her boyfriend's home on Old Elberton
Road to wait for him to return home. When he did return home, he
was reportedly intoxicated and thought his girlfriend had been sleep
ing with his friend. He then began to strike the woman in the face
with his fist causing swelling and lacerations to her right eye. As she
ran to her vehicle and got inside it to leave, the boyfriend allegedly
followed her and opened the door, attempting to drag her out, causing
lacerations on her feet and ankles. As she attempted to fight him off,
he reportedly slammed the door on her left arm, causing the bone in
her upper forearm to break. The woman was transported to Athens
Regional for treatment. The boyfriend was unable to be located imme
diately, but warrants have been filed for his arrest.
In another incident, a Hull man reported that he had been assaulted
by two men.
According to the incident report, he and a woman at his residence
on Sweetgum Alley stated that someone was walking around in his
yard and that they went outside to see who it was. They did not see
anyone, so they went walking around the neighborhood. When they
got to the intersection of Glenn Carrie Road and Grady Drive, the man
said they saw two men known to him standing in a yard there. When
the man spoke to the subjects, he told Deputy Jeff Strickland that they
began beating him up. Strickland observed a small amount of blood
on the victim’s ear. At that point, the man said, he was able to get away
from them and call 911.
Deputy Strickland then located the two alleged assailants on Glenn
Carrie Road, where they stated they were in their yard when the man
began cursing and yelling at them. When they went to see what he
was yelling about, he allegedly slapped one of the men on the side
of the head, at which point one of the men struck him back and then
he was reportedly told to leave. They struck each other several more
times, before the man and woman left and went back to the residence
on Sweetgum Alley.
