Much needed
restroom relief
on its way
in Colbert
By Ben Munro

Much-needed relief
is finally coming to the
Colbert ballpark’s dilapi
dated restrooms.
Colbert leaders on
Monday approved a
$10,000 facelift to update
the deteriorating restroom
facility with Grady Autry,
the county’s recreation
department maintenance
director, supervising the
project.
Colbert leases the fields
to the recreation depart
ment, which in turn, main
tains the facility.
Autry noted the rest
rooms’ state of disrepair.
“You can clean them, but
you can’t get them looking
sanitary," he said.
Autry said his crew prob
ably won’t start the restora
tion project until November
due to the busy sports
schedule at the recreation
department.
The city will utilize
Colbert’s park fund —
money raised over the
course of several years
by a citizens’ committee
— to pay for renovations.
Colbert landed $25,000 in
state grant money last year
to refurbish the restrooms,
but Gov. Sonny Perdue
froze those funds.
Autry, a 25-year employ
ee of the recreation depart
ment, met with Colbert
leaders at their Monday
meeting to discuss the
details and break down the
costs.
The improvement bud
get includes $1,000 for a
roof, $2,352 for materials,
$1,000 for electrical work,
$750 for paint, $4,000 for
plumbing, $400 for con
crete and $450 in miscel
laneous expenses.
The recreation depart
ment will handle all
work in-house, except for
plumbing. Using recreation
department employees will
save the city $2,800, Autry
said.
Colbert has $11,600 in
its park fund. Should the
project exceed the original
$10,000 projection, using
the additional $1,600 is an
option.
The city is also interested
in adding a 20 x 20 picnic
pavilion near the restroom
facility, which would cost
between $3,600 and $3,800.
Decision on that project,
however, is on hold, until
the city can determine if it
has sufficient funds.
Autry noted the potential
of the Colbert park, adding
that he’d like to do more
but is limited due to fund
ing.
“There’s a lot of plans
I’ve got down there,” he
said. “It could be a beauti
ful park.”
Colbert
cont’d from 3A
and the rest later, but
Waggoner said that might end
up costing more.
The council agreed that a
complete survey now is the
right move.
“I say we go ahead and
get the whole thing done and
be done with it,” councilman
Chris Peck said.
The city has expanded
the cemetery twice since
Waggoner became mayor in
1969. The first addition added
approximately 170 spots. The
next enlarged the cemetery by
80 lots.
“By the way, if facts are
known, I have probably sold
more real estate in Madison
County, with the number of
lots, than anybody around,”
Waggoner joked.
