September Student Spotlight — Zack Tankersley
By Savannah Roberts
Freshman Academy FFA Reporter
When you think of pigs, you
think of the common show pig
or the market hog you used
to have as little kid, but for
Zack Tankersley, pigs are a
way of life. He began show
ing in 4-H at the age of nine
and has been going strong ever
since. Zack turned his
showing passion into a full-
fledged job. He purchased
Bertha when she was a piglet,
and she has been with him
ever since. The Tankersleys
paid $400 and transported her
all the way from Iowa. After
many hours of training Bertha
was shown in three statewide
shows. After the end of the
show season, Zack decided to
keep his sow and breed her
to have her Yorkshire piglets.
Bertha recently had 10 piglets
that Zack and his younger
brother, Travis, will show in
the National Junior Swine
Association show in January.
With all this responsibility,
Zack has learned many skills.
Zack learned how be respon
sible at a young age. Then
from there he learned to have a
good attitude and good sports
manship. He had also learned
how to be a leader in the show
arena, as well as in his family
and community.
Zack has even learned how
to manage time and money.
He has a constant schedule
to always make sure the pigs
have food, water and are com
fortable. With all these skills
Zack has set one major goal:
to do well in state showman
ship.
Zack Tankersley checks the feed and health of pigs. This litter is from his show gilt that he
raised and showed two seasons ago. He plans to show this litter as pure breeds as well as
raising some to continue breeding for his farm.
Along with swine showing,
Zack and his family show
dairy heifer then feed them
out to be grass fed-dairy cows.
Zack has been showing dairy
heifers for three and half
years. When the Tankersleys
get the heifer, they are young
and wild. Zack then spends
time with the heifers and
tames them. In the end, Zack
only has to pay for feed for
the heifer and gives the dairy
farmer back his now tame
heifer.
On top of all this, Zack
is currently the Freshman
Academy vice-president and is
hoping to compete in numer
ous career development events
such as livestock judging and
tractor driving, represent
ing not only the Freshman
Academy chapter but Madison
County as a whole.
Zack Tankersley
raises Holstein
Dairy heifers
for the show
season year. He
has to care for
these animals
on a daily basis
as well as works
with the ani
mal’s show ring
presences and
skills.
