Local Weightwatchers
lose over 1,000 lbs.
Weightwatchers in Comer have shed quite
a few pounds.
In 18 weeks since a Weightwatchers group
began meeting at Comer First Baptist Church,
participants have lost a total of 1,015 lbs.
“It’s been fun to stand in front of the room
and watch people slim down,” said director
Karen Hedgelon.
Hedgelon said the group has averaged 37
people per meeting. She said the participants
held a 1,000 lb. party Sept. 3 to celebrate the
weight-loss milestone and that some in the
group have lost over 50 lbs. The meal included
low-calorie food that members learned to
cook in the program.
The group meets every Thursday at Comer
First Baptist Church, with a weigh-in at 6 p.m.
and the meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. The
meetings include instruction from Hedgelon
and an exchange of weight-loss tips among
members.

Comer Farmers’ Market
Lifting fog reveals fresh scuppernongs that fill the mouth
CFM News was interrupted last
week by a 4-year old’s birthday.
Apologies were requested and
given.
This past Saturday, vendors at
the Comer Farmers’ Market were
greeted with a light fog that lifted
quickly. The lifting fog revealed
fresh scuppernongs by Collins
Farm. Large, sweet, juicy fruit
that fill the mouth! They will
make wonderful fresh gifts and
jams. Collins Farm was also
offering Christmas limas and still
in abundance are okra, butter peas
and butter beans. An afternoon
spent shelling is an afternoon
spent relaxed under the shade.
Speaking of relaxing, try some
of the locally produced honey and
jams from the most active bees
and the freshest fruits. No work
required!
Fresh fried pies sold out (as
usual). Eleanor very much appre
ciates her loyal following!
A vendor at the Comer Farmers’
Market will be offering fresh
pecan and apple pies and other
freshly baked goodies. These are
perfect to take to a gathering of
friends or family.
We’ve been assured that a local
resident will be expanding his
farming operation for the spring
of 2010 and will offer many more
varieties of fresh goods. We wel
come all vendors of locally grown
or produced goods.
Anyone who does jewelry,
pottery, beading, glass, paper, or
any other crafts is welcome to
come sell with us on Saturdays.
We won’t turn you away unless
you’re trying to hold a garage
sale. Come join us.
We thank all those who attend
ed the most recent meeting for the
Comer Farmers’ Market. We all
appreciate your time, ideas and
interest in the future of the Comer
Farmers’ Market. If you have
questions about how to become
more involved, please call Leslie
Chandler (706) 788-3348. We
plan on holding another meeting
within the next three weeks.

columnist from Colbert for the

Pet of the week
The Madison Oglethorpe Animal Shelter has pets available for adoption. This week's featured pet
is Gretchen, a 5-year old Retriever. She is one of the pets that belonged to the Oglethorpe County
couple that passed away last month. “She is a very bright-spirited, well-mannered, smart, playful girl
with tons of love just waiting to explode on some lucky family,” shelter officials said. “She is terrific
with other animals, cats as well as dogs, and she is a wonderful playmate for children too.” She, along
with all her siblings, has a reduced adoption fee of $45, which includes spay/neuter, age-appropriate
vaccines and de-worming. "If you could help Gretchen find her new family, please come by to meet
her, she will steal your heart in seconds,” shelter officials said. Visit the shelter’s website at to see the
other animals at the facility. GRETCHEN
