BRWA holds river cleanup
The Broad River Watershed Association held a four-
mile river cleanup on the Broad River in Madison
County betweenHwy 29 and Camp Kiwanis Saturday,
Oct. 10, as part of the statewide Rivers Alive cleanup
program. Due to the river levels being up two feet
from recent rains, “we only collected one measly bag
of trash, but the 14 of us had a great float anyway,”
organizers said. Pictured are Melissa Tufts, Rick

Are paper newspapers in
danger of extinction with the
online paper gaining in popu
larity? Jim Thompson, edito
rial page editor of The Athens
Banner Herald, says no. To
Rotarians on Friday morning,
Thompson talked of the chal
lenges of daily newspapers
today, but said he feels some
people will always want the
feel of the paper in hand as
they drink that morning cup
of coffee.
The Athens paper went on
line in 1995 getting ready
for the Olympics and realized
then that an online paper gave
it a great deal of freedom from
deadlines and also granted
them the ability to update
news as it happens. Online
reporting provides the read-
Thompson
ers a sense of real time news,
and it gives newspapers the
ability to track the number of
readers it has. Thompson said
that with this ability to track
the number of readers, adver
tising becomes a little more
scientific, which is a positive
for those using a newspaper
as their main means of adver
tising. Though Thompson
doesn't believe daily newspa
pers will ever be replaced by
online news, he said he feels
Master Gardeners hold work day

Jerry and Fern Coutant, Doug Capps, June Starkey,
Charles Richards and Victor Johnson mulched flow
erbeds, trimmed shrubbery and planted ferns and
Lenten roses (hellebores). Madison County’s road
and recreation departments provided mulch, accord
ing to the press release.

Guest Speaker:
that the form of the newspa
per will change. One idea is
that it might become shorter
with just a bulleted list of
topics that the reader can then
access online.
One of the failings of the
print era was that there was
a mystery about how the
editorial stories came about,
he said. Some people won
dered how the opinions were
formed and if the paper had
a better feel for the pulse
of the community. The web
de-mystifies the process and
allows people to send in their
own opinions. Thompson
said that online comments
are a good thing.
“If we are going to ask
our readers to believe us, we
ought to be ready to defend
ourselves,” he said.
Thompson said this com
munication gives newspa
pers direct interaction with
their readers. It helps papers
reflect the opinions of the
readers. He said he was
amazed at how many people
wrote in when they opened
it up to readers" comments.
In the future, there might
not even be a daily editorial,
he said. Instead, the future
might hold a different type
of paper with the readers’
opinions taking precedent.
However the news is com
municated to readers, there
will always be those who
want to hear the local news
and look forward to opening
a computer or unfolding the
morning paper to read it with
the morning coffee.
