What’s happening
Adams benefit set
for Saturday in
Daniels ville
There will be a Travis Adams
benefit on Saturday, Oct. 24, to help
him and his family with medical
and other expenses.
A car, truck and motorcycle
show will be held from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. ($10 registration fee) in
Madison County Memorial Park
in Danielsville. A poker run will
be held from 10 a.m. to noon
(registration fee $10). Registration
for the poker run will be held at AC
Auto. Hwy. 29 in Hull, from 9:30
to 11 a.m.
Live music will be furnished
by the Bobby Compton Band and
concessions will be available.
Awards will go to the top ten cars
and the top five truck and bikes,
organizers said.
Adams was severely injured in
an accident at the river on his 34 th
birthday, June 17, 2009, and was
paralyzed from the neck down.
He was Life-Flighted to Grady
Memorial Hospital where he has
undergone surgery for a broken
neck, according to a press release.
He is expected to leave Grady soon
for Shepherd Rehabilitation Center.
The family has no insurance and
faces mounting medical bills and
other expenses, the press release
stated.

Danielsville, Hull and Athens,

Red Hatters
hosting blood drive
The Scarlett O’Hatters and
Magnolia Belles chapters of the
Classic City Region of the Red
Hat Society are hosting a blood
drive at the Athens Donor Center
throughout October.
The blood drive is in honor
of Marie Sparks, a Danielsville
member who was recently diagnosed
with stage IV bone cancer. On Sept.
25, several members kicked off
the blood drive by donating blood
themselves.
The Athens Donor Center, located
at 3525 Atlanta Hwy (at Timothy
Road, in the Academy Sports
shopping Center), is open for blood
and platelet donations on Mondays,
Tuesdays and Wednesdays from
noon until 7 p.m. and on Thursdays,
Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m.
until 3 p.m. “Call 706-546-0681
ext. 233 to schedule an appointment
to save a life,” organizers said. “The
need is constant. The gratification is
instant. Give blood.”
SCV to meet
Oct. 26
The Madison County Greys,
Camp 1526, Sons of Confederate
Veterans will meet Monday, Oct.
26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Community
Room of First Madison Bank in
Colbert. The public is invited.
“The program will be the
surprising history of the Confederate
Battle Flag,” organizers said.
The Sons of Confederate Veterans
is fraternal, historic and honor
society made up of descendents of
Confederate Veterans. Membership
is available to all eligible men age
12 and up.

Relay meeting set
for Oct. 26
A planning meeting for the 2010
Madison County Relay for Life will
be held Monday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m.
at Union Baptist Church on Hwy.
106.
“Calling all Madison County
community members — are you
a leader, a go-getter?” organizers
asked. "Are you looking to promote
your business, make a name for
yourself, get ahead or just make
a difference? If so, the Relay For
Life of Madison County is currently
recruiting volunteer leaders with all
types of skill sets.”
Relay planners said “that anyone
and everyone” is welcome to come
and learn more at an information
and planning meeting Oct. 26.

Shelter holds
second annual
“Frightening Feline
Fest”
The Madison Oglethorpe Animal
Shelter announces its second Annual
Frightening Feline Fest.
The shelter will be open for an
evening of fun games and treats on
Fri., October 30, from 6-8p.m. There
will be fun for all ages, including
face painting, temporary tattoos,
fortune telling, and, of course, plenty
of treats, shelter officials said.
“Last year’s event was so much
fun that everyone wanted to do
it again,” shelter director Susan
Fornash said. “We have even
more fun activities this year, and
we encourage parents to bring
their children. This year we’re
asking folks who come to bring
a food donation for our dogs or
cats so that they can have a happy
Halloween, too."

A low-cost rabies clinic and multi
family yard sale and bake sale will
be held Oct. 30-31 from 7 a.m. to
2 p.m. each day to benefit Colbert
Veterinary Rescue Services.
There will be hot apple cider
and hot chocolate, and a pet
costume contest. One-year rabies
vaccinations will be offered for $7,
while three-year vaccinations will
be $15.
The event will be held at
Colbert Animal Hospital on Hwy.
72 between the Quick Pick and
Riverside Church.j

Veterinary Rescue Services is to
provide veterinary care for healthy,
sick, unwanted, adoptable dogs and

Girl Scout ‘Friends
Dinner’ ahead
Madison County Girl Scouts
will hold their “Friends Dinner”
fundraiser Friday, Oct. 30, from
6-8 p.m. at Sanford Community
Center on Nowhere Road. Dinner
will include chili, vegetable soup,
chicken noodle soup, bread, drink
and a dessert, all served by a Girl
Scout.
Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for
children ages four and under, and $8
adult at the door.
This event is being held in
conjunction with Gordon’s Chapel
UMC’s “trunk-r-treat,” which will
be held from 7-8 p.m. Call 706-255-

Volunteers needed
for ‘haunted field’
Battle Zone Paint Ball on Neese-
Commerce Road is hosting a ben
efit “haunted field" through Oct. 31
with proceeds to go to feed a needy
family at Thanksgiving, according
to organizers.
Volunteers are needed to “haunt”
the field on Thursdays, from 6:30-11
p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays
from 6:30 p.m. to midnight.

Stew sale Nov. 7 for
Harrison VFD
The Harrison Volunteer Fire
Department will have its annual
fundraiser, a Brunswick stew sale,
on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m.

Fourth annual
artist market set for
Nov. 14
The Fourth Annual Madison
County Artist Market is set for
Saturday, Nov. 14, at the historic
Madison County courthouse on the
square in Danielsville. The event
will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is free and the public
is invited, organizers said. There
will be handcrafted items from
over 30 local artists, including folk
art, pottery, jewelry, glass, original
block prints, baskets, painting,
sculptures, metal works, fiber crafts,
and more, according to the press

Comer Christmas
parade, festivities
set for Dec. 5, 6
Plans are under way for the
annual Christmas celebration in
downtown Comer, set for Saturday,
Dec. 5, with the highlight being the
annual Christmas parade at 2 p.m.
Parade activities, which will include
seasonal music, will begin at 1 p.m.
at the grandstand downtown. The
theme for the parade this year is
“Christmas in Comer, the Old Made
New."
Of course, Santa Claus will be in
Comer to greet everyone, young and
old, organizers said.

The annual Christmas tree light
ing will be Sunday evening, Dec. 6,
at 7:30 p.m. Local churches will be
leading the program with numerous
choirs from Madison County pro
viding music.

cials said.
MR. JOHNSON, MISS WOOD
Wood, Johnson to marry
Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Wood, of Comer, announce the
engagement of their daughter, Kelli Wood, to Kenny Johnson,
son of Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson, of Danielsville,
Ms. Wood graduated from North Georgia College with a
degree in political science. She is employed as a buyer for
Nakanishi Manufacturing.
Ms. Wood is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Thomason, of Ila, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wood,
of Comer.
Mr. Johnson graduated from Madison County High School
and is employed at Nakanishi Manufacturing as a mainte
nance technician. He is the grandson of the late James and
Pauline Johnson, of Colbert, and the late Herman and Edna
Armstrong, of Athens.
A May wedding is planned.
COLLINS FAMILY REUNION
SET FOR OCT. 24
The Collins family reunion will be held Saturday,
Oct. 24, at Evangelical Methodist Church, with
lunch served at noon. All descendants of Charlie
and Savannah Collins are urged to attend, as well
as friends and neighbors. The Collins’ children
are Ellie McElroy, Nellie Keen, Allen Coile, Minnie
Phillips and George Collins. “Come early and enjoy
good fellowship,” organizers said. “We would love to
