Jones Chapel welcomes mentors

leader of the “Pairs and Spares” Group of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church
which welcomed the Madison County Mentor Program to its Sept. 1 dinner and
meeting. “Delicious food and great fellowship was shared by all; then, the group
learned about the need for more mentors for students in the Madison County
schools,” organizers said. “Several past and present mentors shared testimonies
about the blessings of being a friend to a student in this program.” For informa

Shiloh Fire Department visits
Jones Chapel UMC Preschool
Jones Chapel Preschool received a special visit from the Shiloh Volunteer Fire
Department recently. Firefighter Brandon Hanley taught the students fire
safety rules and allowed them to check out one of Shiloh’s firetrucks. Preschool
Directors Susan Young and Amy Hancock say that the annual visit from Shiloh
VFD is the “perfect example of community helpers giving of their time and tal
ents to serve their community.”
Hull students take trip to Atlanta
The fifth grade gifted class from Hull-Sanford Elementary School enjoyed a
recent overnight field trip to the Cyclorama and Zoo Atlanta. While visiting the
Cyclorama, the students learned a great deal about Sherman’s march and the
Battle of Atlanta. They also learned that the Cyclorama painting was purchased
along with the remainder of a circus. The painting became the Cyclorama and
the animals from the circus were the beginning of Grant Zoo which is now
Zoo Atlanta. As part of their overnight stay inside Zoo Atlanta, the students
enjoyed animal encounters and classes on food preparation, the use of micro
scopes and the use of night vision goggles. Pictured L to R are Jasmine Means,

Powell, McCall visit with Retired Educators
State representatives Alan Powell and Tom McCall took time spoke to the Madison
County Retired Educators Association members recently on Georgia issues of
importance, including taxes, health insurance and education. Shane Coley, Kelly
Gary, Pat Graham and Kenneth Weaver, 47 th District candidates, were also part
of the program. The MCREA’s next meeting will be Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. at the Ila
Restaurant and will include a program on crime prevention tips by Sheriff Kip
Thomas and a silent auction to benefit the scholarship fund. “All area retired edu
cators are invited to come and join the fun,” organizers said. Pictured are President
Sally Boleman, Madison County Board of Commissioners Chairman Anthony Dove
and members of MCREA.
Colbert students visit ZooAtlanta
Colbert Elementary School fifth grade Challenge students recently participated
in an overnight field trip to ZooAtlanta. The program is called ZooAtlanta
Nightcrawlers. While at the zoo, the students participated in many hands-on
activities, including a wetland study with microscopes, a night tour of the zoo with
night vision scopes and a tour of the “kitchen” where all the food for the animals
is prepared. Pictured above just inside the entrance to the zoo are Breanna Tate,
Bradley Pass, Victoria Angles, Jake May, Isak Tyner, Lin Monterroso, Kristian
Sims, Sarah May, Emily Rose Thome, Cortney Stevenson, Taralee Runyan and
Isaac Parham.
Ila students visit zoo
The Madison County fifth grade gifted students recently went on an overnight
adventure to ZooAtlanta and the Cyclorama. The students were able to visit vari
ous departments of the zoo and learn about animal nutrition and the “ins and
outs” of how the zoo operates, as well as visit the Cyclorama. The students toured
the zoo at night using night vision glasses and were able to see the animals being
fed in the early morning hours. “It was a great trip for all fifth grade students
in Challenge who chose to participate,” teachers said. Pictured are Ila students
