HEADSTART VISITS SENIOR CENTER
Children of the Madison County Headstart entertained folks
from the Madison County Senior Center on “Grandparents
Day.” The classes sang songs, presented the seniors with
cards that they made and offered many hugs.
HERDSMEN AWARD WINNERS
The Madison County Swine Show team was recognized
for its work in the bam during the Georgia National Fair
market pigs and breeding gilt show in Perry. This award
is the Herdsmen Award. Counties compete against one
another by means of teamwork, unity of the students from
one county, cleanliness of pens and isle and educational
display. The Tankersley family made the board display
and Patricia McLaughlin hand-made the black curtains
that the team hangs to unify the group. The whole
swine show team is pictured with the Grand Champion
Herdsman plaque and banner and display.
FFA TO COLLECT CAN TABS
The Freshman Academy FFA chapter will collect can tabs
again this year as one of its community service activi
ties. These can tabs are going toward children that have
cancer and have trouble paying for cancer treatments.
The chapter’s goal is to collect two large 50 gallon trash
cans full, which will be over 300-lbs. of can tabs. Pictured,
Kevin Jones and Tyler Gonzalez count can tabs turned in
from the advisements at the Freshman Academy.

November FFA student
spotlight: Tyler Arnold
By Savannah Roberts
MCHS FFA reporter
During the school year, most
kids come home from school and
watch television, or they stay after
school for a team sport, but Tyler
Arnold doesn’t. When he was just
9, he was inspired by his cousin
Adam Arnold to raise and show
beef cattle.
First he started showing through
the Madison County 4-H and then
when Madison County got a mid
dle school FFA Chapter he started
to show for FFA.
Tyler Arnold has been show
ing for six years, going to shows
all over Georgia. The breeds he
prefers to show are limousin and
commercial heifers. The limousin
heifer for this year’s show season
costs around $3,000 and will be
used for breeding on the family's
farm.
When Tyler wakes up in the
morning, he gets ready for school
and then goes down to the bam
and feeds his show calves. Some
of the feed has to be mixed by hand

because they put so many different
kinds of feed and the feed contains
sweet feed, cotton seed hulls, show
bloom, and beef pulp. The calves
eat about 20 pounds of feed a day.
When it is time for a show, it
takes a lot to get ready. First, you
have to load all of your supplies for
the show. Then, you have to load
the calves up and head off to the
show. When you get to the bam,
you unload the heifers and then
you unload all of the supplies for
the cattle show, then you have to
take the heifers and put them in
the holding pen, then you have to
take them and wash them, then
you have to blew dry them, groom
them and clip their hair so they are
looking their best for the judge.
However, it takes a lot of work
before you get to the show of train
ing the calves hair, feeding cor
rectly and working with the calves
on their ring presence.
FFA HOLDS FALL FESTIVAL
The Madison County Freshman Academy FFA held a fall
festival for ninth grade FFA members. Over 35 attended
the festival, which included pumpkin carving, a candy
giveaway, a doughnut eating contest, a pumpkin seed
spitting contest and pie-in-the-face fun. Pictured is a
group carving their pumpkin.
SPA TREATMENT AT HULL-SANFORD
Hull Sanford teacher Cari Keller and daughter, Bethany,
prove that two hands are better than one as they give
Zy Davenport the spa treatment at the Hull Sanford Fall
Festival.
HULL-SANFORD MAKES BLING
Hull-Sanford teacher Angie Eades and students Autumn
Moore and Jarely Cruz make their own “bling” at the
school’s fall festival.
