4-H’ ers attend state junior conference
Seven junior 4-H’ers from
Madison County recently attended
the statewide junior conference at
the UGA Rock Eagle facility.
Isabel Edwards, daughter
of Scottie and Ginni Edwards,
presided over the statewide
closing assembly. Edwards, who
was elected as president of the
39 county Northeast 4-H District
last March, was responsible for
conducting the meeting and
introducing the various speakers
to the S00 member audience.
Northeast District junior
board member Julie Wood,
granddaughter of Judy and Wade,
led the audience in singing and
Northeast District junior board
member Jessica Hill, daughter
of David and Gail Ragland,
participated in the state skit. All
three helped plan and conduct the
statewide event
India McElroy, daughter of
Darrin and Autumn McElroy, and
Tyler Robertson, son of Stanton
Robertson, performed with the
nationally acclaimed Clovers
and Company at the conference,
McElroy is a featured soloist
and Robertson serves as the lead
guitarist.
Senior 4-H’ers Tiffany Garrett,
Victoria Bryant, Dylan Brooks,
Nathan Coker, Ford Fincher
and John Scott applied for and
were selected to serve as junior
conference instructors.They
planned and led classes on health
topics and 4-H leadership.
At the conference, 4-H’ers
collected over 11,446 pounds
of pop tabs to donate to the
Ronald McDonald House. The
donation equals between $4,000
and $5,000. The 4-H’ers also
wrote “thank you” notes to
send to U.S. service men and
women overseas and prepared
“Hero Packs” for the children of
military parents.
Other junior 4-H’ers attending
the conference included Hayden
Bailey, Steven Roth, Lynette
Merk and Jamie Gordon.
PARKER WINS SCHOLARSHIP
The Baker & Taylor Foundation awarded a $3,000 scholar
ship to Misty Marie Parker, a sophomore at North Georgia
College and State University, and the daughter of Baker &
Taylor customer service employee Ponda Parker. The award
honors Jean Smecz, senior vice president of merchandis
ing for Baker & Taylor, who died Feb. 12 when Continental
Flight 3407 crashed outside of Buffalo, N.Y. In her honor, the
company’s foundation established a college scholarship in
Smecz’s name to annually support the education of a child
of a Baker & Taylor employee. Miss Parker is a graduate of
Madison County High School.

ILA ELEM. HOLDS FALL FESTIVAL
Ila Elementary School recently held its first fall festi
val, complete with games, hot dogs, treats and prizes, a
cakewalk, hayride, face painting and more. The event
was held Friday, Nov. 6, from 6-8 p.m. for the school and
community. “Ila Elementary will plan on having the fes
tival each year as an annual event,” school officials said.
“Thank you again for the many contributions of time,
effort, cakes, gifts etc. from parents, faculty and faculty
family, etc. which allowed our students, families and
friends to have a wonderful night.”
MADISON COUNTY GOAT SHOW TEAM
COMPETES AT THE
GEORGIA NATIONAL FAIR
Madison County FFA and 4-H members traveled to the
Georgia National Fair held in Perry. Madison County
goat exhibitors include Garrett Whitworth, Shyenne
Bruce and Lily Crane. “These students represented the
county and schools very well while at the show,” teach
ers said. In showmanship Lily Crane, Madison County
4-H’er, placed fourth with her goat project. Garrett
Whitworth, sophomore in the MCHS FFA, placed ninth
and third with his two market Boer goat Supervised
Agriculture Experience (SAE) project. Shyenne Bruce
placed ninth with her goat while Lily Crane, Madison
County 4-H member placed second and third with her
meat goat projects.
Logan Pace, Aaron Sartain, Brock Compton, Tatiana Ruiz
and Freshman Academy FF Advisor Trisha Lastly were the
second highest team in the state on the team test.
Aaron Sartain had the second highest individual score in
the state in boating and aquatics.

wildlife judging career develop
ment event Nov. 5.
The team included Brock
Compton, wild turkey manage
ment: Logan Pace, whitetail
deer management; Tatiana Ruiz,
general wildlife identification
and Aaron Sartain, aquatic and
boat regulations.
The team of four competed
against more than 18 other
junior teams from across the
state of Georgia and placed
ninth. Sartain won second high
individual in the aquatic and
boat regulations.
