Thomas speaks to MCREA
Madison County Sheriff Kip Thomas presented a
program on holiday safety at the November meeting of
the Madison County Retired Educators Association.
Members were cautioned to be alert to their
surroundings while out shopping and to be cautious
of personal information given out in stores and on the
Internet. The group also held its annual silent auction that
day to benefit the scholarship fund. The next meeting will
be Dec. 8 at 11a.m. at the Ila Restaurant.
Census hiring part-time
temporary workers
The U. S. Census Bureau is hiring for the 2010 Census,
according to a press release. “These temporary, part-time
jobs offer good pay, flexible hours, weekly paychecks
and the chance to work near home,’’ officials said. Call

Pro-wrestling toy drive set for
Saturday, Dec. 5
Gray Bell Auction is sponsoring a charity pro-wrestling
event on Saturday, Dec. 5, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Admission is one toy for the Madison County Toy
Drive.
Gray Bell Auction is located on Hwy. 281 near
Royston.

Senior Center menu, activities
for Dec. 7-11
The Eloise McCurley Senior Center has announced its
lunch menu and planned activities for Monday, Dec. 7,
through Friday, Dec. 11.
Monday - meatloaf with mushroom gravy, mashed
potatoes, seasoned collard greens, com muffin, applesauce
cup and low-fat milk.

DINNER OUTING
Proceeds from the sale of handmade crafts
and the fall plant sale at the Madison County
Senior Center were used to treat the seniors
to a trip to the Golden Corral in Winder.
“Thank you for Madison County for sup
porting the Eloise McCurley Senior Center,”
organizers said.
Tuesday - chicken and yellow rice casserole, broccoli,
carrot cuts, wheat bread, diced pear cup and low-fat
milk.

ment of their daughter,
Marriann Nicole Slater, to
Cole Bradford Tonge, son of
Brenda Cross Tonge and the
late Dr. Joel Bradford Tonge,
Commerce.
The future bride’s grandpar
ents are Mr. and Mrs. Willard
Slater of Wasilla, Alaska and
Mr. and Mrs. Lou Picotti of
Boise, Idaho.
The future groom’s grand
parents are the late Mr. and
Mrs. Jack S. Tonge, formerly
of Duluth, the late Mr. and
Mrs. W.H. Cross, formerly of
Brunswick.
The bride elect is a 2003
graduate of Kofa High School,
Yuma, Ariz., and is in her
final year at Northern Arizona
University-Yuma, majoring in
environmental science with
a biology emphasis. She is
employed with NAU-Yuma.
The groom is a 2003 gradu
ate of Madison County High
School, Danielsville, and a
2009 graduate of Arizona State
University. Tonge graduated with
MR. TONGE, MISS SLATER
honors from ASU with a degree
in history. He is employed with
All About Tennis in Scottsdale,
Ariz.
The wedding is planned
for Jan. 9, 2010, at St. John
Neumann Catholic Church in
Yuma, Az. Friends and relatives
are invited to attend. The couple
will reside in Yuma, Ariz.
Athens Flute Choir
concert
set for Dec. 13
The Athens Flute Choir will
present its holiday concert Sunday,
Dec. 13, at 6:30 p.m. at Central
Baptist Church, 720 Danielsville
Road, Athens.

Heating assistance
to open
for general public
The Ninth District Opportunity
Inc. opened the 2009-10 heating
assistance program for all age groups
Dec. 1.
Appointments can be made
by calling 1-800-822-0179.
All applicants must call for
an appointment. No walk in
appointments will be made. “The
phone line will be very busy,
however, please continue to call,"
organizers said.
Those seeking assistance should
have the following documents: a
heating statement that includes an
account number (not a delivery ticket
if propane), proof of all income for
all household numbers for the past 30
days, legal documentation of Social
Security numbers for all household
members.
Ark receives grant
The Jackson EMC Foundation has
awarded The Ark: United Ministry
Outreach Center a $7,000 grant to
provide emergency rent assistance
to lower income residents who have
had their work hours cut back and for
its Noah Fund that provides grants to
senior citizens. An outreach center
providing emergency financial
assistance to the low-income
residents of Clarke and surrounding
counties, The Ark helps individuals
deal with emergency problems, such
as rent, utilities and prescription
drugs. The ministry is funded in part
by 35 Athens-Clarke congregations.
Cancer group gets
grants for program
The Cancer Foundation of
Northeast Georgia recently received
a $2,500 grant from the Athens Area
Community Foundation, Inc., and
a $5,000 grant from the Frances
Hollis Brain Foundation, Inc., to
assist the group's financial assistance
program.
The financial assistance program
is designed to help with financial
emergencies for cancer patients who
are undergoing chemotherapy or
radiation treatment, so they can focus
on recovery and maintain their basic
life needs. All of the grant money
will go to funding the program and
ensuring cancer patients’ quality of
life.
The Athens Area Community
Foundation, Inc. is a community
foundation that serves Athens-Clark,
Oconee, Barrow, Jackson, Madison
and Oglethorpe counties and seeks
to improve the quality of life and
economic standards of all community
members.
The Frances Hollis Brain
Foundation, Inc., promotes alleviating
human suffering.
The Cancer Foundation of
Northeast Georgia is a nonprofit
organization whose mission is to
help alleviate the financial burden of
cancer for eligible patients.

Forestry pageant set
for Feb. 20
Girls from all counties in Georgia
are invited to enter the local Miss
Forestry Pageant set for Feb. 20 at
the Jones Chapel United Methodist
Family Life Center, located five
miles north of Danielsville on Hwy.

Applications are available at all
public schools within Madison
and Elbert counties, schools in
surrounding counties, and by mail or
email to lthompson61@windstream.

The pageant will consist of 6 age
categories ranging from 2 to 24 years
of age. The categories are: teeny, 2
to 3 years; tiny, 4 to 6 years; little,
7 to 9 years; junior, 10 to 12 years;
teen, 13 to 16 years; and Miss, 17
to 24 years.
Group pictures will be made Feb. 7
at Jones Chapel Family Life Center.
Applications can be turned in at that
time. The deadline for receiving late
applications will be Feb. 10.
This is a preliminary pageant to the
71st Miss Georgia Forestry Pageant
to be held in Tifton in June. The
winners from each age division will
have their entry fees paid to compete
in the Miss Georgia Forestry Pageant
and will receive $100 savings bonds,
a professionally embroidered satin
banner, a rhinestone tiara, a large
trophy and roses.
The Pilot Club of Madison County
sponsors the local Miss Forestry

for court-appointed
child advocacy
Volunteers are needed for court-
appointed child advocacy services.
‘ Do you have time and a passion for
helping children?" officials ask. “Do
you have excellent communication
skills, the ability to do research and
objectively evaluate your findings?
The CASA (Court-Appointed
Special Advocate) program may be
able to help you put all your skill
sets to use through an extremely
rewarding volunteer experience.”
The Northeast Georgia CASA
program provides trained volunteers
who advocate for children involved
in abuse and neglect cases in the
Mountain and Northern Circuit
juvenile courts (serving Elbert,
Franklin, Habersham, Hart, Madison,
Oglethorpe, Rabun and Stephens
counties).
The next training class for new
CASA volunteers will begin in
late January 2010. Call the CASA
