Madison County 4-H
wins state Challenge Bowl
4-H’ers John Scott,
Dylan Brooks, Isabel
Edwards, and Rory Smith
led Madison County to its
eighth state 4-H Challenge
Bowl Championship during
the Georgia National Fair in
Perry. The second place state
team was also from Madison
County and was comprised of
Russell Adams, Haley Seay,
Chase Goldman, Chandler
Perry and Alyssa Maxwell.
The two teams, together, won
$1,500 for the county 4-H
program.
The day-long competition
pitted teams from across the
state in a double elimination
contest in which the partici
pants proved their knowledge
in several different areas.
This year, the areas included
herb gardening, preventing
foodbome illnesses, flag eti
quette, manners, 4-H history,
Intemet/business etiquette and
SET (science, engineering
and technology) topics. Over
25 teams from across the state
participated.
The 4-H teams consist of
one senior (high school age),
one Junior (seventh or eighth
grade), one Cloverleaf (fifth
or sixth grade), and a random
member from any age group.
The first eight questions are
targeted to specific team
members and the following
12 questions are toss-ups.
The competition to win a
spot on one of the two Madison
County teams is rigorous. The
students attend weekly study
sessions, complete homework
assignments, take tests and
compete in a county competi
tion prior to the state contest.
The students were coached
by Beth Scott-Brown and
Amanda Adams, and student
coaches Kasey Roth and
Jessica Hill. Steven Goldman
and Ford Fincher served as
scorekeepers and Jordan
Lunsford assisted the mem
bers during the competition.
MOON, BUTLER PARTICIPATE
IN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Madison County High School juniors Hanna Moon and
Katie Butler were selected to participate in the annual
Career Technical Instruction (CTI) Fall Leadership
Conference at the Atlanta Airport Marriott Nov. 12-13.
The purpose of the conference is to support students
in developing their leadership skills through partici
pation in various leadership sessions. These students
were chosen because they showed great improve
ment in career, technical and agricultural education
courses and work adjustment skills, and to recognize
the achievement of these students. Next semester, both
students plan to pursue dual enrollment at Athens
Technical College; Butler plans to enroll in the cosme
tology program and Moon in the early childhood edu
cation program. Their CTI coordinator, and Region 3
Director, is Tammy Botelho Caudell. For more informa
tion about Georgia’s CTI program, visit their website at

LT. COL. DAVID MCMICKLE
SPEAKS TO STUDENTS
Students on team 7-2 at Madison County Middle School
recently enjoyed Lt. Col. David McMickle’s presentation on
the U.S. Army. McMickle explained the ranks and responsi
bilities of people in the U.S. Army. The students thought he
had a great job flying black hawk helicopters, teachers said.
McMickle shared his experiences and observations from his
time in Afghanistan. The lack of modern day conveniences
like electricity and television amazed the students. They
were shocked at how young girls were when they married
and how a lack of roads kept people from going to vote in
their first elections. McMickle ended his presentation with
select students showing how physically fit they were in a
PT exercise directed by McMickle. He also left some MRE’s
(meals ready to eat) for students to see what soldiers ate
when they were on maneuvers. Pictured, McMickle shows a
power point presentation on life in the Army.
GEORGIA NATIONAL FAIR
Madison County FFA members Zack Tankersley and Travis
Tankersley recently traveled to Perry and competed in the
State Dairy Cattle Show.
