BRWA river float, walk set for May 13
The Broad River
Watershed Association
(BRWA) will host a river
float on Saturday, May 13,
to view the rare shoal lily
along the lower section of
the Broad River at Anthony
Shoals, officials said.
Those wishing to attend
should meet at the Broad
River Campground on
Hwy. 79 at 9:30 a.m. May
13. The group will float
from Hwy. 17 to Hwy.
79 in Elbert, Wilkes, and
Lincoln counties. “The
rare Spider Shoal Lily
(Hymenocallis coronaria)
should be in full bloom at
this time and putting on an
amazing show at Anthony
Shoals,” officials noted.
There are portions of
this float that can be dif
ficult, according to the
press release. For safety
reasons, only experienced
paddlers will be allowed
to participate in the float.
The float distance is a little
over nine miles and takes
approximately six hours to
paddle. During the float,
the group will also do a
River Cleanup as part of
the National River Cleanup
Week.
Bring your own canoe/
kayak or contact Michael
Moody at the Broad
River Outpost (BRO) at
706-795-3242, to arrange
for a canoe or kayak to
be brought to the float.
This year’s spring float is
a fundraiser with a $25
donation per person for
participants, plus any cost
of canoe/kayak rental. To
sign up, email info@brwa.
org with your name, con
tact information, the num
ber of people in your party,
and whether you will bring
your own boat or rent one
from BRO. Donations for
the float can be made at
www.brwa.org (please put
in the comments that your
donation is for the float) or
during check in on the day
of the float.
For those who want to
see the shoal lilies but
don’t want to paddle, the
BRWA is planning two
drives to a site close to
the shoals (trips at 9:30
a.m. and 1 p.m). There is
a quarter mile easy walk
ing trail that gets you to a
site along the river where
the lilies are 20 feet from
the bank, officials said. “In
low water years, you can
wade out to see them,” offi
cials noted. “The north fac
ing slope along this side of
the river also has a number
of interesting plants and
lichen covered boulders
that we can examine.”
Parking and river access
on this side of the river is
limited to eight participants
for each trip. BRWA will
carpool from the Corps of
Engineers campground.
Registration is required.
This trip is weather depen
dent as heavy rain during
the week beforehand can
make the access road
impassable, officials noted.
Please email info@brwa.
org to sign up.
Pre-registration is
required. Please RSVP for
the walk or float by May
10.
