Colbert students learn about
classmates, Hispanic culture
Rose Stovall is pictured with Marlon Antunez-Vaca.
Rose Stovall, the ESOL
teacher at Colbert Elementary
School, knows that the best
way to learn is to teach others,
so she is making the most out
of National Hispanic Heritage
Month in September by turn
ing her students into teachers.
Each morning, a student
from Hispanic heritage takes
the telephone/microphone and
becomes the educator for their
schoolmates by teaching a dif
ferent Spanish word or phrase.
Fourth and fifth grade ESOL
(English to Speakers of Other
Languages) students coming
from Mexico, Honduras, El
Salvador and Guatemala come
together in their ESOL class
room to learn to communicate
in English where Ms. Stovall
and Mr. Leonard Deal, Para-
pro and interpreter, use a vari
ety of methods to enhance their
students’ English language
development. The classroom
is filled with objects labeled
with its English word, and the
welcome sign on the door is in
Spanish to make the students
feel more comfortable.
On September 15, Marlon
Antunez-Vaca kicked off
the project by teaching the
Cougars the word “Hola.”
But the “Word of the Day” is
only one part of the Hispanic
Appreciation Month's project.
In addition to the 7:55 a.m.
announcements, CES students
will experience a real Fiesta
Oct. 7. Probably in the gym,
but perhaps in the outside open
air, the fiesta will have dancing,
Hispanic food tasting, and art
— all designed to have ESOL
students teach others about
their heritage. Ms. Stovall has
also developed a mini-lesson
she calls “Guess My Food,”
which she will teach to the
student body via the Cougar
Chronicles video, allowing her
to step into each classroom vir
tually.
Colbert Cougars from Sept.
15-Oct. 15 will learn more than
the 18 words and phrases they
hear on the announcements
each morning. They will learn
to appreciate and learn from
their friends who come from
different cultures.
Madison County Chamber of Commerce to
host annual Pioneer Harvest Festival Nov. 6
The Madison County Chamber of
Commerce and Partners in Agriculture
will host the Madison County Pioneer
Harvest Festival on Saturday, Nov. 6,
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Madison
County Fairgrounds, located at 1254
Main Street in Comer.
The festival, typically attracting 2,500
guests each year, encompasses a wide
variety of exhibits ranging from live
music, interactive stations with county
farmers, fresh food and more. During the
festival, guests will be given the opportu
nity to connect with local entrepreneurs
and farmers as well as purchase products
created in Madison County (MADICO
MADE).
“The purpose of this event has always
been to educate the community on the
importance of agriculture and the integral
role it plays in our local economy and
daily lives,” said Anna Strickland, execu
tive director of the chamber.
This year's festival will also include
both a local farmer’s market — where
guests can purchase these MADICO
MADE items — as well as a tailgat
ing area with live broadcasts of sporting
events. Furthermore, attendees will have
the opportunity to meet the county’s own
variety of entrepreneurs and learn more
about the local businesses within the
Madison County community.
Admission into the festival will be free-
of-charge for attending guests. To stay
updated on the Pioneer Harvest Festival,
follow the Madison County Chamber of
Commerce’s Facebook page and visit
