Thursday, Prof. Goo. S.* Fulton, who
ncveral years past had charge of the
academy at this place. He has now a
flourishing school in Dogwood Valley
in Whitfield county.
Judge Foster is having his buss

same site, which will have a front of 26
feet on Court House street and running
back about 66 on Wall shreefcy.
A number of persons frott this place
speak of going down to Atlanta on the
4th. The hire for round trip is only
$1.75 from this place, and affords an
opportunity seldom occurring to visit
the Capitol cheaply.
The National Hotel at Dalton is one
of the best managed in this part of the

comfortable and pleasant the stay
of guests at his house. When visiting

The wheat crop in this section is
now about harvested, and from all
around us comes the cheering assurance
that the < rop is the best that has been
known for many years. The win

growth, and the spring admirable tor a
fine development ot the grain. The
harvest rains may yet produce sonic
damage to wheat in the shock if sur

A now era in the piano trade has
been inaugurated by the Mendelssohn

whose advertisement appears elsewhere.
This company is regularly incorporated
under the laws of the State ot New
York, and composed of eminent piano
manufacturers, with the express object
of selling pianos direct to tho people at
factory prices without the intervention
of agents or dealers. r lhese pianos
made one of the finest displays at the
Centennial Exhibition, and were unan
imously recommended for the Diploma
of Honor and Medal of Merit. 'lhis

Our Distinguished Senators,
Gordon and Hill Splendid Por
traits OB’ Them. —Wc are in receipt
of two magnificent line engravings of
tho statosmen whose names head this
article. They form part of a series, em
bracing tho portraits of tho distinguish
ed living Southern statesmen, which is
being published by a leading Southern
house. They are truthful likenesses —
speaking images of the great originals,
and executed in the highest style of
engraving. They are both splendid
#Orks of art, nud destined to take their
places in the homes of our people, be
aide Stuart’s Washington and other
mastorpicces.
The manly, noble, generous features
of our beloved Gordon, stand out as it
endued with life. The fire of the uu
daunted grey eyo, tho intellect of the
massive brow, the battle-soar red cheek,
all show tho gallant man who has led
his people in war and in peace.
The portrait of Hill is no less
cess—true in all its details to the great
statesman, but as different from that of
Gordon as aro tho two men. But ev
ery characteristic of the man is finely
expressed by the portrait of this son of
Georgia.
Tiwo forbids a more extended notice.
We can only recommend to our readers
theso pictures, and the enterprise, na
tive and homeborn, which gives them
to ue. Mr. James T. Gray, Atlanta,
Ga., is tho general agent, and desires au
agent in every town and county of this
State, to placo the portraits before the
people. Apply to him for agencies or
for the portraits. Price, 82.00 each.
A Masonic excursion from Dalton to
Hatcher’s Spring, on the Coosa, came

At o’clock last. Sunday afternoon
Bartow Furnace was discovered to be on
fire. The best efforts of the hands
were put forth to stay the flames, but in
spite of all, the bridge bouse, eoke shed
and depot were eonsumed, together
with about 2,000 bushels of coke. No
jnachinery was injured except the hoist
ing apparatus, which was ruined. The
loss is estimated at about $2,000. The
fire caught from the hot blast pipes.—
The repairing will be commenced at
once, and regular work will be re

Dear limes :
Have you any police in your city ?
Our village will have to have a force
organized as thieves are getting so bold.
About three weeks ago Mr. John IJ.
Brownlee’s store was broken into and
robbed of forty or fifty dollars, and on
Saturday last in broad opeu daylight J.
M. Morrison’s and J. 11. Brownlee’s
money drawers were ransacked and the
contents shoved into the pockets of
some oue they did not belong to. It
is strange how adhesive some folks
hands are any how. So let us have a
police force, or merchants must give
strict orders that customers or loafers
must not lay upon tho counters.
J. M. Morrison brought in a thirty
1 pound cat fish last Saturday morning.
He caught it in the river near this
place.

ItH| ,/f ' in their operation, 1
they are still the .
most thorough and ’
searching cathar
tic medicine that can be employed: cleans
ing the stomach and bowels, and even the
blood. In small doses of one pill a day,
they stimulate the digestive organs and
promote vigorous health.
Ayer’s Pills have been known for
more than a quarter of a century, and have
obtained a world-wide reputation for their
virtues. They correct diseased action in
the several assimilative organs of the
body, and are so composed that obstruc
tions within their range can rarely with
stand or evade them. Not only do they
cure the every-day complaints of every
body, but also formidable -and dangerous
diseases that have baffled the best of
human skill. While they produce power
ful effects, they are, at the same time, the ;
safest and best physic for children. By
their aperient action they gripe much less
than the common purgatives, and never
give pain when the bowels are not inflamed.
They reach the vital fountains of the blood,
and strengthen the system by freeing it
from the elements of weakness.
Adapted to all ages and conditions in
all climates, containing neither calomel
nor any deleterious drug, these Pills may
be taken with safety by anybody. Their 1
sugar-coating preserves them ever fresh, 1
and makes them pleasant to take; while
being purely vegetable, no harm can arise
from their use in any quantity.
