“Etowah Bill,” tho new boat, has
been detained at Carter’s several &ays
on account of some little damage done
to its running gear. It wa to have
gone down the river yesterday. It will
carry on its return trip about 1,000
sacks of wheat.
On last Friday morning Mr. Alex.
Hill, who lives up the river some Dine
miles camo into town accompanied by
an individual of rathor small propor
tions compared to those of himself, en
veloped in a suit of his clothing look
ing much the worse for wear. We in
duced Mr. Hill to tell the story of the
particular coincidence which caused the
gentleman tj be thus olad, when be
mads known the following facta ; A
little before daylight that morning Mr.
Hill heard a voice oq tha river baok j
apparently coming from one in distress
and induced his son Horace to go down
and ascertain what was the matter.—
Reaching the supposed spot from which
calls proceeded he saw upon the bank
t man in distress, to be sure, being by
•ome combination of circumstances dL
vested of his habilaments of dress save
hi* shirt and coat, tho latter tied by
the sleeves around his waist while the
tail hung gracefully down in front.—
Frightfully did the apeotaole appear be
fore him as he saw the picturo among
the brush in tho morning dawn. ‘‘ln
distress” thought Iloraco, but as I
know not your mission, a shot-gun
would be a safe companion with which
to venture near such an object. So ho
returnod to the house and came again
with his gun, and then drew near to
the man of strange appearance. The
man made knowu to him tho cause of
his troubles, stating he had lodgod the
uiglit before a short distance above and
taking an early start had concluded to
enjoy the refreshing influences of a
morning bath carefully laying his gar
ments on a treacherous limb hauging
rather over the water, which giving
way precipitated his wardrobe into the
b'iddy stream. Horace crediting his
#tory looked kindly to a release from
his predicament, and a suit of his fath
er s clothing he had laid aside was soon
at his disposal. Mr. Hill accompanied
him to town where he made some shift
by which he was enabled to proceed on
his journey.
Ihe man gives his name as Smolk,
and says he is a tailor by trade, and has
b' <-Q recently a.t work in Daltou, where
oe has ti famj'ly. He states he was
negotiating fa ,tUo upper portions of the
eounty for lands upon which to locate a
few families from one of the Eastern
States, and having carried out his plans
• bating back to the railroad with
ij^e ?tiou of going Vo Atlanta.
Matrimony is not the thing it used
to was, say the boys, and the market is
very dull now. They look at the finan
cial side of the question, and although
they would like to, they are afraid to
make the venture. Why some thirty
years ago, about ao well as we can re
member the fellows began to look out
for wives at the ages of 18 and 21, now
it is nothing to see a dozen stags in a
town like Calhoun poking along at the
ages of 25 and 30 who refuse to even
look cross-eyed at a girl for fear of gets
ting themaeves “in for it.” Get out of
this, boys. There is enough home ma
terial here to produce a dozen sensations
tho ooming fall.

is always regarding his health. Why?
Because health is of the first coi.sider

hacking cough. Discard some of the
ephemeral pleasures of the day, such as
theatre going, cigar-smoking, &c.. and

that will be a lasting benefit. For in
