A negro, an escaped coovict from the
Alabama penitentiary, made an attempt
ta outrage the person of Mias Temple
ton, a daughter of Roe John W. Tern
pletOv, in Columbia, Teun., recently,
and was lynched by a body of indigo
jjant citizens on Tuesday last. The

direction. Roper had over an hour's
start and made good use of it. An ef
fort that day failed. The search wa
renewed Sunday. A suspicious negro,
was known to h ive passed through
Prospect. The next heard was his
capture at Athens Ala., sixty-two mile
south by two gentlemen from Columbia.
The negro was carried to the lady and
identified. A rope thrown out of the
Court House window was placed around
his neck and his body was 9000 dang
ling at the end of it.
Mr. Templeton has relatives in thi
county, and having resided here sever*
years ago, is welTknowu to our citizen*
as a pious, good man.
