A New Plaut for the Door Yard.
Among the new plants distributed
this j Car from the botanic gardeu is the
Araliu papyrilera. This plant produces
the substance known aich paper; it has
sdt, downy palinet leaves ; it grows ten
teot high four, inches in diameter, full
of white pith like the elder ; in a ful *5
grown specimen the pith is about oi e
inch iu diameter. It is divided into
pieces three inches long, and by tltf aid
of a sharp instrument is unrolled, form'
ing the thin narrow sheets known asrioo
paper greatly used by the Chinese for
di awing figures of plants and animal*
and also for making artificial flowers.
Until about 1870* the scource of this
substance was unknown to scientists. —
The Chinese on inquiry, gave very fan.
cif'ul figures and description of it, illus
trating the fuct that then, as now, “for
ways that are dark and for trick3 that are
v .in, the heitheu Chinee is peculiar.”
It \ as first introduced from the island
of Formosa to Europe, at Kant gardens
in 1860 ; from thete it has been widely
disseminated. It is almost naturalized
in Australia : in the Sontbern States
and perhaps California, it will flourish.
As an out door ornamental foliage plant
it is well worthy of cultivation in any
part of the couufry. — Washington Star.
Influence in Slieep.
In answer to a correspondent who in
quires as the treatment of influenza in
sheep tlieep Western Farm Journal
says. “The first thing in any case of
this kind is to equalize the circulation
and remove the irritating causes. If
the bowels are bound—constipated-give a
wine glassful of linseed or olive oil. Hub
the legs and ears with tincture of
capsicum, as a counter-irritant and to
equalize the circulation. Take one
ouuco of hoarhound and the same of
marshmollow root, one-half an ounce
each of powdered elecampane and lico
rice root, one half a table6poonful of
powered cayenne, and two tab’espoonfills
molasses and vinegar. Mix,
pour a quart of boiling water on it and
when culd stain though a cloth and give
a tablespoouful night and morning to
each sheep. This preparation will fer
ment easily, and therefore no more
should be prepared than can bo used in
two days. If necessary, injections com
posed of o le ounce of powdered bayber
ry bark, one-half ounce gum arabic and
a pint of boiliug water, to be used when
blood warm. Keep the sheep in warm,
dry, well-ventilatc i quarters.
Mucu care ought to be observed in
sowing seeds. Sometimes they are
sown too deep, and yet if not deep
enough they will dry up and not grow
at all. The depth must be determined
to the size of the seen and the charac
ter of the soil. If the soil be light and
sandy there is not so much danger of
the seed rotting from deep sowing as if
the soil be stiff; and even in stiff soil
the depth will have to be determined
by the condition of the soil, and sliall
low sowing, if the ground is well
pulverized and pressed firm, is more fa
vorable than deop planting with a
rough surface. Finely pulverized soil
with a well-pressed surface is indeed
the very best condition for success with
all Needs ; and the shallowest kind of
sowing so that the seeds be firmly im-*
b. and led in the toil, is the essence of good
seed sowing.
Every’ year the practice of useing
v x:a quite warm to the hand grows n
fuvur with me and now I could m t
give a plant the smallest sip of cold wa
ter, being it would injure it. Saucers
are quite needfi 1 and every pot should
bo supplied with one, and if it is tilled
every morning with boiling watar it add
to the luxuriance of the plant, and fre
quently no other mo'sture will be needed
lor several days. The contents of the
tea pot are also effi< a ious in plant growth
and the tea leave&jcan be added in small
quantities to the soil of the pots. Ivies
are always beautified by an application
of tea leaves and tea and it is an cxeeN
ent thing to wet a sponge in tea and
moist the leaves with it as it wipes
off all the dust which accumulates upon
them coutiuually.— Cor. New England
