CALHOUN TIMES
LOCAL AKWS.
The nimble flea now maketh one
swear.
The present session of Calhoun
Academy closes it. about two weeks.
The lumber business seems lively.—
Improvements are still looking up.
The candidate is now looking around
for those friends who are to bring him
out.
Mu. W. 11. Bonner has left in our
sanctum a specimen of yellow clover
measuring three feet or over in height.
There is a prospect that the fruit
crop this year will be entirely destroyed.
It generally is—by those who like it.
A VELtY neat little business house has
been erected en the John P. King lot
on Court House street, in the j lace (J
the ungainly looking structure that re
cently stood there.
The anticipations of the übiquitous
candidate appear in indistinct outlines
on the local political sky. The ‘‘long
est pole,” you know.
Mr. Tom Foster anticipates erect'
ing a large, handsome and durable brick
structure this season on the site where
Foster k Harlan are now doing busi
ness.
The Mary Carter bad a little trou
ble up the river last week, but was only
delayed a short while. rihe has been
shipping corn to this point, from whence
some of it goes to Atlanta.
Picnic at Craneater Springs next
Saturday. A big crowd and a good
time expected. Gen. Colquitt and per
haps other distinguished gentlemen will
be there.
M e have made arrangements to sup-
Ily ( nr readers with a letter from the
t enter nial every week. The second
letter will be found in this issue. They
vill be interesting to all.
Upon inquiry we learn that there is
at prerent less fear among farmers of
injury to wheat from the rust than when
it first made its appearance It seems
to be 1 confined to the blade and in most
places the holds seem in good condition.
A fair cn p is even now Poked for.
As the season for leui nudes and
iced drinks approaches, a young man of
our sflculintance insists that it is her
pla; i t> tre it, to such delic t cses this
year. Bit tv >uld he be willing to re
ceive such cnl treatment from ‘he fair
sex ? tii it is the question.
Two small cani rs got up a sensation
in the posioffict Monday morning while
an eager crowd were waiting fur the
mail. They tried the flavor of each
other’s hides, and tucked their tails and
vamoosed after being coaxed by a little
sole leather.
The members of ihe Baptist Church
are making preparation to seal their
building, having already purchased the
material. Mr. Mark Moore is to do the
work, an 1 if the design, which includes
some elegant arch-work is carried out it
will greatly add to the looks of the ed
ifice.

When you see a man that shuffles
loosely along, with his knees knocking
together and his toes pointing in—
whose eyes roll furtively and whose hand
is ever suddenly jerking itself above his

on it that that man is haunted by a

POETR Y AND PROSE OF STRING. —
The glories of spiing time has ever
been a favorite theme of the poets. They
glow with rapture when describing bow
“Spring unlocks the flowers to paint the
laughing soil,” but forget that “Death
rides on every pass ng breeze, and lurks
in evejy flower.” Yes the vernal sea
son however bright and beautiful it may
seem is fraught with perils to the human
race. In our climate it is the most
dangerous to health co any portion of
the year. The sudden changes o'* the
weatrer produce Colds. Coughs, Catarrh,
Bronchitis, Rheumatism and Neuralgia
whi’e the poisonous exhßations arising
from the earth, induce deadly fevers. —
As tics perilous season the greatest care
should be exercised, and the Seven
Seals or Golden Wonler, that
speedv, ce.tain and effectual cure fi*r
all ailments brought on by variable
weather, or by inhaling miasmatic va
pors, should be kept where it can bo
brought quickly into rcqus’itiun.

Never before has s> n.uch practical
information of this nature been pubUsh

While there are many treatise pur
porting to give valuable statistics of
America in convenient foim, it will he
found upon examination that they
contain a voluminous amount of mat*
ter which is of no utility to any citi
zen.
A comparison of the various produc
tions wdi convince anv intelligent per
son that the “Century of Independence”
embraces the important documents to he
ound in them all while it omits that
which is superfluous and adds instead a
vast collectijn of invaluable facts. No
other arrangement gives oneTuurth the
information in the same space and the
arrangement is what makes it inval
uahle as a reference book, it having
been complied under the immediate
supervision of officials at Washing
ton
'I he lawyer, hanker, merchant and
farmer will each conclude that it must
have befen prepared especially wi'h ref
ference to his convenience.
It is designated for this work to take
the place in politics that Webster’s Dic
tionary does in language, and Appleton’s
Gazetteer in general literature. The
binding, paper and illustrations have
been made to compare with the general
iharacter of the work.
Though a person can be a good citi
zen without a thorough education, no
good citizen can enjoy the right of fran
chise intelligently without possessing the
information contained in this book.

will gladly avail themselves of the op
