.at .t when the elks are tender and
lull of juice, before they have turned to
woody liber. Then it uholild bo cut
when dry, and cured in the ‘dude. I
like !•.. mow in tl o afternoon and morn
inp, and let the Clover cure say from ‘J
o’clock in the forenoon till about 4 in
the afternoon, and if the sun is hot, all
the better. During this time it should
be stirred as. much as possible, and tlicre
mrc a tedder is almost indispensable in
making clover hay. Otherwise a great
deal ol labor would be laid out stirring.
I am aware that most farmers do not
deem it necessary, and do not stir their
chiver much ; but than I know that
base r ime farmers usually have an in
ferior quality of hay. ] would stir the
clover as much as possib l ", and if it
a m and be kept flying in the air all the
time the quality would be bettered.—
Then cock it in small piles with narrow
bn -; and high, pointed lops. Here it
must sweat and cure still further, and
ii the weather be dry and favorable, al
ow stimiiwr about thirty hours in the
cock, it is ready to draw. A slight air
ing may be given just before drawing,
by turning and letting the bottoms dry.
i>ut be careful not to air it too much.
1 hod rather have it a little green than
too dry. jf there is no dampness of
dew or rain, it will do to put in the
mow when pretty green.
1 say put iu the mow, for clover ought
ii-vcr to be stacked, it is bad stun to
stand the weather, and L never could
cure it near as good in the stack as in
: . ho mow. It should not lie put in a
damp, or basement mow. If some of
ii appears green, it is a good plan to
scatter a little bright straw among it,
as it is put away, but old, musty straw is
worse than none.
To sum up, the points to be observed
are. cut early, wilt it quickly and evenly
by stirring a great deal, cure it m the
coca, and share in dry, narrow mows
under a roof, it is better to run the
ri.sx of some mold from imperfect cur
ing in the mow than to sun it so much
that the leaves will hill and the stalk be
brittle and woody.
