The Old Farm flense.
At flic foot, of the hill, near tbo old red mill,
In a quiet shady sjiot.
Just peepiug through, half hid from view,
Stands a little moss grown cot,
And straying through, at the open door,
The sunbeams play on the raided floci.
' He easy chair all patched with care,
Is placed by the old hearth stone;
th witching grace in the old fireplace,
The evergreens are strewn
And pictures hang on the whitened wall,
And the old clock ticks in the cottage hall.
More lovely still, on the window sill,
The dew-eyed flowers rest,
While midst the leaves on the moss-grown
eaves
The inarti- builds her nest,
And all day long thtveuinmer breeze
Ib whispering love to the bended trees.
Over the doo”, all covered o’er
With a sack of dark green baize,
ays a musket old, whose worth is told,
In the events of other days ;
And tho powderfl ask, and the hunter’s horn,
Have hung beside it for many a main,
For years have fled, with a noioelcec tread,
Like dreams away,
And left in their flight, all shorn of his
might,
A father—old and gray ;
And tho soft wind played with his snow
white hair
And the old man sleeps in his easy chair.
Inside the door, on the sanded floor,
Light, airy footsteps glide,
And a maiden fair, with flaxen huir,
Kneels by the old man’s side—
An old oak wrecked by the angry storm,
While the ivy clings to its trembling form.
The FrolUafele Crops.
Tho Department of Agriculture asked
its correspondents: What branch of
agriculture has been most profitable in
your county this year.
Generalizing very briefly the results
of this investigation, as to the industries
popularly esteemed most productive, lo
cal preferences are as follows : in Maine,
hay occupies the first place and dairy
husbandry the second ; hay and stock
raising are of equal importance in New
Hampshire ; dairy husbandry stands
high in its predominance in Vermont;
in Massachusetts, hay first, market gar
dening next; the garden and the dairy
divide the honors in Rhode Island ; aod
tobacco stands first in Connecticut.
Thore is much diversity in New York,
but dairy husbandry is far in advance,
being the choice of one-third of the coun
ties. There is much variety in New
Jersey, though market gardening stands
first. In Pennsylvania, manufacturing
and mining make a varied production
most popular, few counties indicating
very decided preferences, though wheat
(as few would suppose) holds tho first
place in one-sixth of the counties. In
Delaware, tobacco; in Maryland, tobac
co and fruit growing. Of move than fif
ty Virginia counties expressind decided
preferences, 1G favor tobacco, 9 “mixed
husbandryG corn, 5 stock raising, 5
market gardening, and others pea-nuts,
nhecp husbandry, fruit growing and
wheat. In North Carolina corn stands
numerically before cotton. In Florida
sugar cane is'preferrcd, while cotton pre
dominates in South Carolina, Georgia,
Alabama, Mississippi, and in Texas. In
Arkansas corn stands first; and in Ten
nessee hay and corn are preferred. In
West Virginia, corn and stock growing;
in Kentucky, tobacco and corn ; in Ohio
great diveisity appears—sheep husband
ry, corn, general cropping, wheat, hay
and fruit growing ; and Michigan a sim
ilar variety—wheat, dairying and fruit
growing. Corn is king in Indiana and
hay prime minister. Corn is also first
in Illinois, and wheat next. Minneso
ta, wheat; in Wisconsin, wheat and the
dairy ; in lowa and Missouri, stock grow
ing, corn and wheat. The order in
Kansas and Nebraska is wheat, stock
growing and corn. In California,
wheat, sheep husbandry and fruit grow
ing. In Oregon, wheat and stock grow
ing.

Salt on Land.—A correspondent
of the Western Rural says: “ About 5
o’clock one fine summer morning I no
ticed that where salt had been sown the
previous day, every grain of salt had
been attached to itself the dew, and
formed on the surface a wet spot about
the size of a sixpence, the ground being
generally very dry. On our light lauds
it consolidates them and makes them es
pecially firm and acceptable to the wheat
plant, whose straw will stand firm and
erect, although four and a half feet long.
It is also unfavorable to certain weeks
by this consideration. It provents rav
age of the wire worm. It is especially
favorable to saline plants, such as mari
golds, whose ashes contain fifty per cent,
of salt. I never saw guano accept mixed
with its weight of salt. Like every
thing else it has, I am sorry to say,
greatly risen in price. I observe that
all crops seem to thrive well on land
near salt water, especially where the
land is drained.”
Tender-Footed Horses. —An old
man who had much experience in hand
ling and dealings in horses for more
than half a century, said to me recently
that he had never known a horse to get
tenderfooted that was kept loose in a
shed and yard, or in a boxed stall.
That turning around and treading with
their forward feet in tho manure, keep
them constantly moist and soft. His
theory appeared perfectly reasonable to
me. I have no box stalls, but I used
shavings under the horses forward feet,
and then the last thing at night to lie
on. He also remarked that he never
knew a flat-footed horse but was a good
worker.— Correspondent Live - Stock
Journal.
Books.—A learned writer says of
books: “ They are masters who in
struct ua without rod or ferules, with
out harsh words or anger, without bread
or moucy. If you approach them, they
are not asleep, if you seek them, they
do not hide ; if you blunder, they do
not scold ; if you are ignorant, they do
laugh at you ”
