PEPPER HILL.
Having gone through Curry town, we will
now do up that classic locality known in the
history of city as “Pepper Hill,” where i l
got its name from the Lord only knows, un
less it was out of a set of castors, though
some say it was won in a raffle, but the care
less historian neglected to record the fact,
therefore the origin of Pepper Hill is yet
agitating the minds of our oldest and most
respectable inhabitants. Pepper Hill is the
lame applied to a little conglomeration of
dapsided .arelessly built rookeries situated
in the hill corner of West Broad and River
;treet. Penper Hill can boast of a large
:olored Republican majority, and some Of
lie sharpest chicken lifters that ever ruffled
a feather. It is a hard locality, and Sewing
Machine agents and Life Insurance solicitors
always steer clear cf it, which of itself is
.sufficient proof that it is dangerous ground.
It is the rival of Bryan Row for blood and
thunder entertainments, and many of our
clergymen have decided in favor of Pepper
Hill. Some of the colored bretherin are
noted for their sleight of hand tricks, and it
is said that some of them can steal the sugar
out of your coffee, or the salt out of your
bread. In iact “Slippery Dick” one of the
most noted, think nothing of stealing the
crape off of a mourners hat in a funeral pto
cession. He steals his friends collar buttons
in broad day light sometimes just to keep in
practice, and once made a bet of ten to five
that he could steal a set of false teeth from
a widow’s mouth. He won the bet, and
sent half to aid in furnishing red flannel
suits and pictorial tracts to the uneducated
heathens. They know no Sabbath on Pep
per Hill, but know every Policeman in the
city. It is a hard locality, and no stranger
dare not venture there at night without a
double barrel shot gun in each hand, and
each loaded to the muzzle with buck-shot,
tnd capped with water proof caps. Cat
ish is the principle article of food, and chain
ightning the national beverage. The
vonien eat clay, and the boys shoot marbles
uid steal for a living. Escorts will be fur
lished by our obliging chief of Police to alj
visitors who with to see Pepper Hill.
P. S—Pepper Hill is improving, the Coro
ner hasn’t had a job up there in two days
Two or three of the boys were badly cut the
other night, but that’s nothing, it was only
done for fun, and to destroy the seeming
monotony of the village.
