A FUNNY
Thing about putting on shoes no matter
what shoe you put on first the other one will
be left. Another tunny thing, no matter if
they are made on a long last, they wont last
any longer on that account. Tire man who
fell into the Savannah liver the other day,
went in up to his shoe tops and got drowned,
not on account of the shoes, but because he
went in head first. Our
NEW
Shoes for men are now' in. While we carry
every grade, from the hand-made French calf
up to the workingman’s dollar shoe, there’s
one particular shoe which we sell that is
wiTHOti i fah I’TION the best shoe for the aver
age man to buy that ever was made : that’s
our genuine Goodyear welt shoe, winch we|
sell for §3. We sell these shoes tor ixactiy
what they are. Many a shoe salesman
thinks it a smart
SCHEME
To sell them for hand-made, simply because
not one man in a thousand knows the differ
ence. We sell them for Goodyear welts, and
they .ire better than some hand-made shoes.
We have them in all widths, in all sizes in
Blucher, Lace or Congress, and we know them
so well that we say to you, when you buy
them if they wear out too soon you can have
your choice—S3 in cash or new shoes for
nothing. Fit your feet comfortably if you are
going anywhere

THE VALUE OF BAKING POWDER
I World's Fair Jury kctllra a Much Mooted
qncstlcn.
The relative value of baking powder has
been long discussed. The question has at
last been answered bvT World’s Fair jury of
award. Dr. Price's Cream Baking Powder is
declared to be the best. Several different
points of superiority were claimed for it,
and they were all found to exist bv the jury,
which was made up of scientific men best
fitted to make a thorough analysis of all the
various kinds of baking powder submitted
for the prize. Dr H W. Wiley, chief cliem- •
ist of the United States department of agri
culture, an expert, and the highest authority
on the healtlifulness of food products y.i
America, gave the jury the benefit of his
analysis of all the different brands and merit
alone prompted the award.
Especial attention is called to the adver
tisement of the Price Bakiqg Powder Com
pany, which occupied the entire eighth page
of yesterday's issue.
interstate Commerce Conference.
Washington, lune 13. —[By Postal Co.]—
To-day in Washington will be held a confer
ence which will settle the fate of all the
proposed amendments to the interstate com
merce act. The conference will be attended
by the sub-coinmittee of the railroad com
mittee of the House ot Representatives,
Messis. Storer of Ohio, Patterson of Tennes
see and Gresham of Texas, and by commit
tees of the National Tiansportalion Association,
the National Board of Trade, the Association
of State Railroad Commissioners and the In
terstate Commerce Commission. Word
comes from two different sources that the re
sult ot this conference is practically certain to
be the only legislation this session on the in
terstate commerce act.
The conference was called at the request
of the sub-commitlee and of the interstate
commissioners to get a full exposition of
j the views of the commercial interests. For
months there has been an active railroad
lobby in Washin ’tun It consists of Gen
eral Counsel Cowan, of the Baltimore and
Ohio; Blodgett of the Wabash, Cary of the
St. Paul, Bond of the Richmond and Dan
ville, and Commissioner Stahlman of the
Southern Railway and Steamship Associa
tion. They have been in continuous daily
session since December, and have called
scores of the braniest railroad officials to
Washington to help argue their case. They
have complete power Io act for all the rail
roads of the United States. Their one pur
pose in Washington is to secure legislation
which will permit pooling.

New York, June 12 [By Postal Co.J
I he New York Herald’s announcement ol the
discovery of bacteria in telephone transmitters
has attracted the widest attention in telephone
circles The discovery was made by Dr. W.
Th. Scheele, a well-known chemist.
The doctor concludes Ills review of his dis
coveries by suggesting in the Herald the fol
lowing remedy :
"1 would suggest that all transmitters be
cleansed with the olption of alcohol, ether
and glycerine, part for part, an atomizer being
used, so that Hie most remote parts of the
diaphragm can be reached. Ido not think it
would be necessary to cleanse the transmitters
more than once a year."

NY : SKr. Cnv, neb., June 13 [By Postal
Co.] Hie ejectment case of Bishop Bonacum
against Father M. J. Cotbelt will come oi'i
agmn before Judge Eaton to-day. This is a
case gro.-.t;--- out of the now ’celebrated
trouble between Father Corbett and his
l':>lie.p, wheiei-i the latter seeks to eject his
subordinate from the parsonage at Palmyra.
Several notices have been served on Father
Corbett, all of which were ignored, and the
bishop brought suit in March and continu
ance was grant;.’ until April 16 During the
hearing or, that day a highly dramatic scene .
occurred. The bishop had asserted that '
Corbett had made certain statements which
were false. Father Corbett exclaimed: I
‘‘l made no such statement, i quote Mgr.
Satoiii. They are his words, and I have them
here m evidence. Do you call Mgr. S.itoHi a
liat?"
In a moment plai. tiff, defe’.dsnt ard at
tor"cy; were upon their feet, and were with
difficulty quieted by the judge. As the de
fcnd ’i'.i declared that it would be impossible ,
for several of his- witnesses to be present on
that day, the case was continued until to-day. |
