TO MV FRIEND.
When evening’s dewy shades de
scend,
I sigli for tliee mv bosom friend ;
Near \ on proud mountain’s hoary
brow,
Where oft* we breath’d our art
less vow,
When life, and love, and hope
were new,
And fancy’s liand soft pictures
drew
Os promis’d bliss a!) vision
bright !
Whv do ye mock mv eager sight ?
Wbv do these brilliant tints arise,
K but to cheat mv ardent eves r
Why snatch the bev’rage from try
I'P,
i'Tn as I bend its sweets to sip ?
Why place before my raptur’d
view
Delights so transient, sn untrue,
That whilst I gaze, their beauties l
seem
.A bright, y>“t evanescent dream—
Fair as the veil by fancy wove,
’i o deck the brow of infant love ;
Idild .is the breath of Zephyr’s
wing,
When first lie wooestlie blushing
spring,;
Sweet as the flow’l et’s soft per
i line,
Yet fragile as it:;.fleeting bloom? j
thou ! to this fond breast so j
dear,
F'eturn , ndilrv the bitter tear ;
Come with that voice, that look of 1
h ve,
And eai ii obtrusive fear remove ; ;
B< fore the magic of thine eve,
See da> k distrust and anguish fly : i
One glance, one soul-entrancing j
smile,
From lips devoid of art or guile, j
Can still tin* tempest of ntv soul,
And eat I) corrosive care coni rnul; )
Ah then return, my peace restore,
And fondly vow to part ro more.

SWEET F.LLF.N, —SORROW SCHt Lit.
Coid blew the wind n rlam f

When Ellen It ft her home ;
And brav’d the horrors of the
night,
O’er t'rearv w ilds to roam .
The lovely m-yid had lute been
t?av,
When hope and pleasure smil’d,
But now, alas ! how chang’d the
day
With Ellen—sorrow’s child.
She lopg was William’s promis'd
bride.
But ah ! lioiv sad a doom,
The gentle youth in beauty’s
pride,
Was summon’d to the. tomh ;
No more tlioso jays shall Ellen
prove,
Winch many an hour beguil’d •
From morn to eve she mourns i
her love—
Sweet Elien— sorrow’s child.
With fanlt’ring step away she |
hies,
O’er William’s grave to weep, !
For Ellen there with tears and {
sighs,
Her watch would often keep .-
Tlte pitying angel saw her woe,
Ami came with aspect mild,
1 liy tears shall now no lender

Sweet Ellen—sorrow’s child.
Thy plaintive notes were heart!
above,
Where thou shall soon find
list ;
Apa'u ilmu shall behold thy love,
And be foicvt r blest :
Ah l t; u such bliss be mine, she
cried,
A\ T t! t voice and looks so wild—
Then sin k upon the earth and
died,
Sweet Ellen—sorrow’s child.
THE RHINOCEROS.
Mr. BRUCF.’s defeription of
the manners of the .wo homed
ihinoceros, is highly vvotiht oi
tio'tce. He inlorms us ihat,'’
beiides the trees, capable of
molt rcfiltance, iheiearein the
vast forefts within the rain?,
trees of a loiter confidence,
and of a very lucculent quality,
which seem to be destined lor
his principal food. For the
purpose of gaining the highest
branches of these, his upper lip
is capable of being lengthened
out so as to increase his power
of laying hold with it, in the
fume manner as the elephant
does with his trunk. With this
lip, and the allillar.ee of his
tongue, he pulls down the up’
pgr branches, which have molt
leaves, and thcle hr devours
firft ; having dripped the tree
of its branches, he does not
therefore abandon it, but, plac
ing his snout as low in the trunk
as he finds his horns will enter,
he rips up the body ol the tree,
and reduces it to thin pieces
like so many laths; arid when
he has thus prepared it, he em
braces as much of it as he can
in his monllrous jaws, and,
twills it round with as much
ease as an ox would do a root
of celery, or any such pot-herb
or garden-duff.”
