From the L’teranj Magazine.
bi:th gelert, or the grave of
the GR FYHnUND.
The story of this ballad is fradi
t ion am in a village at the foot
o’ Snowdon , where Llewelyn
the gi eat had a house; the grey
hound, named Ge ert. was giv
en to him by his father in law
king John in the year 1204, K
the place to this day is called
Beth Getert , or the grave of the
greyhound.
The spearmen heard the bugle
sound,
And cheady smil’d the morn,
And many a biach, and many a
hound,
Obey’d Llewelyn’s born.
And still he blew a louder blast,
Anil gave a lustier cheer,
“ Come, Geiert, couie, wert nev
er last
“ Llewely n’s horn tojicar !
/
“ Oh where does faithful Gclcrt
roatn,
“ T he flow’r of ad Ins race,
,l S true, so brave, a iamb at
home,
“ Aftron in the chacc r”
’Twasonlvat Lkwelvu’s board,
The f .itliful Geiert fed,
lie watch’d, he serv’d, lie cheer’d
Ins lord,
And ceminel’d his bed.
In sooth he was a peerless hound,
I’ll? gift of warlik’ John ;
But now no Geiert could be tound
And ail tbe chaee rode on.
Arid now as o’er the rocks and
llcilv
The gallant chitlings rise,
All Snowdon’s cragey chaos yells
The many mingied cries.
That dav Llewelyn littlu I sv’d
Thecliaceof hart or hare.
And scant and small the booty
prov’d,
For Geiert was not there.
Unpleas’d Llewelyn homeward
hied,
When n ar the por'ai seat
His truant Geiert he. espied,
Bound:u iris hard to greet.

Tremendous still in death.
Ah ! what was then Llewelyn’s
pain !
For now the truth was clear,
i His gallant hound the wolf had
slain
To save Llewelyn’s heir.
Vain, vain was all Llewelyn’s
woe.

There never could the sports
man pass,
Or forester, unmov’d ;
There oft the tear-besprinkled
grass
Llewelyn’s sorrow prov’d ;
And there he hung hiS horn and
spear,
And there, as evening fell,
In laucy’s car he oft would hear
Poor Gcleri’s dying yell.
And till great Snowdon’s rocks
grow old,
Aud cease the storm to brave,
The constriated spot snail hold
T he name of“Gelert’s grave.”
