ELEGY ON MY AULD FID
DI.K.
“ Whose name shall remain in
the Hang.”
Os'.mn.
We see that i’k revolving day,
The rarest e ’rtlily things decay,
Nor can >nr best eudeavers save,
Them frae the universal grave;
Still .some disaster wnforse>m
Maks them as they had never been.
Spe niv Auld Fiddle- ance sae
good,
That pat me aft in canty mood,
When a’ things fail’d, see how
decay’d
In broken fragments where she’s
laid.
In you dark nook wi* other lum_
her,
Nne mair ntv study to encumber;
Os brig and finger-brod bereft,
Nae string nor bass nor tenor left,
Her band broke aft', her vvame
dung in,
And for to tune her n( ’er a pip;
Her back and sides in waofu’ case,
Sad vestiges of her disgrace.
Nae mair, alas! on her I'll play
Piano sweet or blyth strathspey;
Nae mair, when domic moods in
vade,
Shall she be summon’d to my aid;
Tike some auid trophy, she may
hing,
A dismal melancholy thing.
What though she was of win
some frame,
•And,fi at, the fam’d Cr.-monacaine,
Yet that and ilka tender note
Cuuid not retard the ornnken sot,
Wha, st,me blind, tient a iuet lie’
saw,
Crush’d her poor banes aoainst
the wa’:
A*tone pathetiek, sadly sweet,
She breath’d beneath his clumsy
feet,
And likes the Swan near death sae
site
Sang mournfu’ her ain elegy,
NotJßob *i Burns, nor that glib
chielrl
Height Hamilton o’ Gilbert field,
Nor royal James, o’ wit sae keen,
Nor Allan Ranisv’s seF I ween,
Coo and hae express and m verso or
prose
The wrath that in mv bosom rose,
When I beheld my good auld fid
dle
Crush’d like a peal-creel i’ the
middle!
I bann’d, and rais’d my doubl’d
loot,
Rcso!v,d to fell the gracelesscoof,
And had we been upon a level,
By he’d got,;tu unco (level;
Hut pity twin’d my lieart about,
And sav’d the donnert dunce’s
snout.
May minstrel’s a’ the kestrel hate
And mock aid jeer him air and
late,
May his ass-logs be ever found
Deal to t!ie harmony of sound;
May fighting cats wi’ eldritch
screams,
And howling dogs distuib his
dreams;
May discord deave him night and
day,
And corbies sing his fnn’rul lay,
While my auld fiddle, though
she’s lame,
Like chiefs ofyoreshall hear her
fame.
Ye winged minstrels of the wind,
May ye my silent fiddle find,
Anil as ye fleet your nightly
rounds
Recall, as erst,enchanting sounds;
Such airs as oft in Selma’s hall,
While bung his harp against the
wall,
Half viewless forms, as Ossian
sings,
Oft swept with airy hand life
strings;
Haste, haste!, ye tuneful shapes of
air,
And to her ruin’d frame repair;
Tuue her to sadly pleasing |, t
And wake the notes ol other days!

George Faulkner, of Dub
lin, in the beginning of the
lafl century, was breda printer;
and for a long time continued
his bu.fi nefs in the line or flail
font's, twopenny pamphlets, a
flhall newspaper, a:id cheap
hooks. Swift, taking notice
that the man paid more alien!
tion to accuracy in typography
than mofl of his brethren, em
ployed him to print his “ Dra
per’s Letters,” and fomeofhis
other w ritings of cotifequence.
This quickly drew George in.
to repute ; and, finding money
to flow in apace, he began to
neglcbt his printing,prels and
ca’c, and aflume the. airs of a
line gentktrr.an. One day, cal
ling on Swift about !ome bu
siness, he made his appearance
in a gay laced suit of clothes,
and in other refpcfls tricked
off like a birth-day courtier.
On being admitted, Swift, with
a Hern voice, demanded, “ Who
are you Sir ?"—“ Iam —Sir —
(Taiti he fauitering) George
Faulkner, printer.” “ You
George l-’aulknei, you lying
villain !” returned Swift; “how
dare you attempt to irnpoie up
on me? George Faulkner is my
good fiiend; you are a vile
scoundrel and an impeftor.
Begone!” —George took ine
hint; and, sneaking home
soon returned with his little
brown wig, fliori fiurted coat,
leather jacket and blue stock
ings—the diets he ufuallv
wore. How do you do, ho
ne lb George!” laid Swift.
“ Not an hour ago, there came
a puppy that would have palm
edhimfeifon me for you, I
made him go off, with a ven
geance : but if ever 1 catch him
here again, I (hall ceriainly
lay my cane over his fhouiders
to fome purpole,”
