Athens Summer School.
On Several occaseions we have
called attention to the Unrversi-
ty Summer School at Athens,
withthe view of impressing school
officers and teachers throughout
the State the importance of this
sobool and to enlist their sympa
thy for, and their support of, it.
We have taken an interest in it
because we want to see it prosper
and becauso we are satisfied that
it is all that it claims to be. As
a matter of foot, it is as good a
school of the kind as can be found
anywhere. •
The purpose of it, of course, is
to afford teachers an opportunity
to make themselves more efficient
in their profession. In the time
in which the school is in session
each year they can get a vast
amount of information on subjects
with which it is necessary that
they shall be more or less familiar
in order to be successful as toach-

It seems that the officers of the
summer school feel a certain
amount of diacouriigement on ac
count of thb indifference of school
officials in some parts of the state
to the school, and who are active
in the interests of the school at
Knoxville. We cannot under
stand why school officials in this
state should prefer the school at
Knoxville to the one at Athens.
As far as we are informed the
Tennessee, institution has no ad
vantages over the Georgia school,
and, if it has no advantages why
should Georgians lend it a help
ing hand in preference to the
sohool in their own state?
Naturally the officers of the

It is true the Georgia institu
tion is not endowed with an abun
dance of money for the work which
it has in hand, but it has enough
to make good every one of its
promises and to provide a course
of instruction that cannot be ex
celled anywhere in the South. It
is the duty of the school offioials
in this state to give the institu
tion every possible encourage
ment. If they will do this they
have no cause'to regret it. The
University Summer School is jfte-

There are a certain olass of re

that everybody else is going' cal-

They take it upon themselves to

much weight as' a'gnat against a
