THE SCHOOLS.
The whole city ia up in arms en
dorsing our position and the com
munication of “J. J. 0.” in regard
to the double daily session of the
oity schools, and we believe that
should the matter be submitted
to the people that it would be
carried overwhelmingly. The
arguments set forth last week
were conclusive to any fair minded
man that it is a necessity not only
for the education of the children
in a more thorough way, but also
to keep them out of meanness.
There are other questions in re
gard to the schools which are also
being discussed. One is that the
vacations should either be shorter
or more diversified. For instance
two weeks at Christmas, two weeks
at Easter, and six weeks in the
summer. There is hardly any use
having suoh long vacations at a
time, besides it is paying out
money for something that you
don’t get. For instance with four
months vacation in the summer
and two weeks vacation at Christ
mas, added to this the numerous
holidays during the year would
make about six months Bchool
session and that divided by half a
day in school, with holiday, on
Saturday would reduce the school
hours down considerably. Every,
thing seems to be contracted, ex
cept the pay. We believe that if
you are going to have a school to
educate the children it should be
for that purpose, and not for the
sole reason that a number of peo
ple must make a living and save
money. We hope the board of
education will look seriously into
this matter, and if they do not
care to have the responsibility on
their own shoulders if they will
let the people pass upon it at the
ballot-box and we are sure that
they will eettle it right.
It ia estimated by iho Macon
Telegraph that there occur an
nually in Georgia 188,000 eases of
malaria. It therefore advises the
cultivation “in and about the
homes of the people those prophy-
lactio plants that, in other coun
tries, have been found protective
against malaria." It is to be re
marked that medical mon of the
lay do not set so muoh store on
the prevention of malaria by the
growing of plants around a honse
as they used to do. The mosquito
theory of germ transmission has
changed a whole lot of ideas
respecting the mysterious thing,
or number of things, that we hear
called malaria. The preventive
that seems to be in highest favor
now is the ridding the premises of
all stagnant water in which
moaquitoeB might breed and in
providing of a pure water supply
for drinking purposes.
We haven’t seen or heard much
of the new hotel recently. There
should be a lost, strayed or stolen
ad. placed somewhere soon, before
we forget about it.

MAINTAINING THE LAW
Public opinion, and that means
grand juries to a considerable de
gree, can eettle the weal or woe of
a town. For instance, if the
grand juries wink at a crime like
gambling, Sabbath breakiug and
the like, it means that they will
abound, and the town will be
overrun with them. Suppose the
city enforces the state law relative
to the opening'of the etores."on
Sunday, and numbers of ouFpeo
ple abide by it, yet one or two
others do not it kills the entire
effect, and unless the grand jury
takes it in hand the good people
can do nothing, and the entire
business will open. We think
this one matter should be settled
and at once, and not let the law
be violated in their face. Either
enforce it on all or tear the bars
down, and let the whole business
go to selling and wipe Sunday
from the face of the earth. That 1
the way they do in St. Louis. We
said to a barber in that oity on
Saturday night, as we looked at a
sign which read “This shop open
all day Sunday,” “do you work
on Sunday’s 1” “Yes,” said he,
“I would much rather not do so,
but it it required. I want to rest
one day.” And then we began to
disouts the question, and said,
“laying aside the religious part of
it”—and he stopped us and said,
“religion ain’t in it—it’s a baok
number in these parts, its gone,
and that is the first time I have
heard about it in a long time.”
Shall Athens become that way?
If it was left to some folks we
know it will, and verily we believe
it ia fast doming.
