Truly, a Won-
The most wonderful, most deli,
cate and.most accurate mechanical
achievement of hnmau ingenuity
is the watch. To complete 24
hours, its balance wheel, if rolled
out each swing, travels nearly 10
miles, and the roller jewel strikes
against the fork 482 thousand
times. The requisite power to
produce these stupefying figures
is estimated to be equal that of
only 4 fleas. Still more aston
ishing is the fact that if the
balance wheel decreases or in
creases its swing by only one mil
lionth part, it will show a gain
or loss of 1 second. Extreme cold
or heat, running, jumping, bump
ing, jarring, or anything outside
of the most favorable conditions
will cause a variation, while the
least bit of dirt, gummigcil, or
the least bit of rust will cause a
much greater varatiou to say
nothing of the results from ac-
oidents and troubles of a more
serious nature.
Finally we come to the most re
markable and the most serious
feature of the whole watch
business. No matter how irregular
your own habits may be, that
watch of yours must travel its 10
miles eaon day and' do it within
the exact same time; and no
matter how little may be wrong
with your watoh, there is only one
watchmaker in a thousand com
petent to render you satisfactory
services on suoh a delicate
maohine. Therefore go to R.
Brandt, the jeweler, with your
Towns-McGhee.
On last Wednesday, at Bowman
Ga., occurred the marriage of Mr,
Janies H. Towns and Miss Walla
MoGhee. Those who accompanied
Mr. TownB were Messrs
mpau
Young, W. P. Gresham, J. A,
Pitner, James Payne, Henry Co.
mer, J. R. Bray, S. E. Morgan
and Miss Blanche Bray, and the
editor of the Courier. They
left on the S. A. L. and reached
Elberton in time for dinner and
then by private conveyance went
over to Bowman, where a large
concourse of friends had gathered
to witness the ceremony.
The home was most beautifully
decorated with Autumn leaves of
yellow, green and white, by Misses
Pearl Fowler and May Seger, of
Atlanta. After waiting only
short time the bridal party filed
into the room preceded by Rev. A.
A. Sullivan who performed the
ceremony in bis usual elegant
way.
The attendants were Mr. J. R,
Bray with Miss Pearl Fowler and
Mr. S. E. Morgan with Miss
Blauohe Bray, of Arnoldsville.
The bride was dressed in blue
silk with white trimmings and
earned a bouquet of white Chry
santhemums. It was a beautiful
wedding.
The groom is one of Clarke’s
most prosperous as well as most
popular merchant farmers, and
numbers his friends by the score,
while his bride is well known in
all this seotion of the country,
having taught in several eounties
around and was in great demand
aa a teacher. Her praises are
sung by every one who knows her
as being a woman of great force of
oharaeter.
The congratulations of all their
friends are being showered upon
them copiously, and we know
of no oouple who deserve them
more. Cake made by the hands
of the bride, whioh was most do-
lioious was served to the party on

Ever since we began the publi
cation of the Courier, we have
stood pat upon the proposition
that we would hue to the line in
all cases—that we have done so
we leave our readers to judge
We have pandered to no party or
set. Of course we have exercised
ight of franchise, and voted
for whom we pleased, and will so
oontinue, bnt in doing that we
never swore our allegiauoe to any
set of men, and as we have no
friends to reward or enemies to
punish, we “keep in the middle
of the road,” and shoot at wrong,
doing or oppression on either
side, and no man can accuse us
justly of flopping or riding the
fence.
When an nnjust attaok is made
on an officer of the oity and we
see it, we would not be true to
onrself and to our oity if we did
not "show it up,” and if we see
underhanded means to get iuto
political power by any party we
do not hesitate to let it be known;
and when we see mismanagement
in municipal affairs, we say so,
and it is up to the people to do
the rest.
Our idea always has been that
an officer of the oity who knows
that any rottenness or graft existB
should come out like a man and
show it up, instead of trying to
be eleoted again, or get in another
orowd, who would doubtless do
the same thing.
Another thing we heliove a man
should be eleoted to an offioe upon
bis merits—if he has any—and
not by trying to drag another
man’s uame or oharaoter iuto the
mire to accomplish this end.
But onee for all yon will find
the Courier as ready to correct
the faults of the party it has
espoused, or those of the party it
has opposed, believing as we do
that the policy of equal rights to
ail and special privileges to none
should prevail and will prevail so
far ss we are concerned, and if
any man or set of men think it
