Governor Joseph M. Brown.
Governor Jos. M. Brown reminds us of Stonewall Jackson—he
stands like a stone wall against the onsloughts of his enemies. Ever
since he has been governor, they have been incessantly hurling their
shots at him, mostly of prevarications, hut they have invariably re
bounded, and the consequence was that they had to hunt up some
thing else. With the exception of a very few people, who wanted
the people to see what they knew about the dictionary, and hence
“writ” a card for The Journal about jeans and the like, the thing
hasn’t caught fire like they thought it should.
The Macon Telegraph has shown the utter fallacy of the idea of
buying the terminals at Chattanooga, and because Hoke Smith and
his cohorts wanted it done, there was no reason on earth why it
should have been done at this time, and the governor knew it, and
the people know it, and for that reason the long spirts of hot-air in
the Journal availeth them nothing. The legislature left it discre
tionary with the governor and he has used his prerogative wisely, as
he has handled everything else that came before him.
But The Journal say: “The legislature demanded that ho
purchase this tract,” and we say to The Journal that the people de
manded that the legislature do many thing which was incorporated
in the message of the governor, hut they refused to obey the man
dates of the people in the largest convention ever assembled, and
had they have paid attention to this demand, instead of frittering
away their time trying to do nothing, and killing days of precious time
for which they were receiving the money of the people in pay, we
would even have been in a been in a better position than we are
now, but they saw fit to look to the outs for instructions, and w»*
might say right here that the people are going to want to know’ a
thing or two from them.
The Georgian seems to be bringing out men as “compromises.”
We don’t want any compromise. Joe Brown, like Moses, led the
people out from under the slavery of a self-constituted czar, and the
people being free will remain so. The conditions now, and the
time the race was made are entirely different, as there was no work
for the workman then, but there is plenty now. Capital is not shy
of Georgia as it was then, because they know their money will be
protected.
No, sir! Governor Brown has made an ideal governor; he has
made few mistakes, if any, and they were always on the side of
mercy.
We do not know whether he will make the race again, but we
are sure that a grateful people will be happy to return him if he
wants it.
In the meantime you have only until the 5th day of April to
register, and if your name is not on the books by that time, so far
as you are concerned, you will have no more chance to vote than the
Fiji Islander.

Washington, D. C., March 13.—Pas
tor Bussell of the Brooklyn Taberna
cle, New York, preached here twice
today to splendid audiences. One of
his discourses was entitled, “The Over
throw of Satan’s Empire." We report
the other one from the text above
quoted. Pastor Russell said:—
As Christians iu the light of this
wonderful Twentieth Century we stand
at the parting of the ways and must
decide for right or for wrong, for
truth or for falsehood, in respect to
religious convictions. Without
questioning the sincerity of our fore
fathers, we all object to their theology,
it is iu vain that ministers aud
Bible class teachers longer deny the
facts of the cuse. Nor will intelligent
and honest people agree that It is
right that through their creeds they
should profess one tliiug, aud in their
and general conversation they
should ignore or absolutely deny the
teachings of those creeds. Yet this Is
the position of practically all the think
ing people of Christendom. Their con
sciences will not stand for this much
longer. If they refruln from telling
the Truth aud taking their stand for
It, they will not only sear their con
sciences (1 Timothy iv, 2) aud corre
spondingly separate themselves from
God's favor, but additionally their
course will soouer or later briug upon
the disapproval aud contempt of
all honest people. For although the
masses are not yet aroused ou the sub
ject, they are rapidly gettlug awake.

Jl HAVE OPENED* which for a century has been gradual-

Creator send to eternal torment mil'

Inconsistency of such a theory our
good Methodist brethren tell us that
they hope that God has some other

lands and, perhaps, of civilized lands.
appreciate the loving heart
which prompts this answer and we
agree that it Is true—that God has
another way for these. But when we
attempt to point out what that other
way is, some of these dear friends in
quire, Is it Methodism? Did John
Wesley preach it? Our answer is, No,
Brother Wesley did not preach it and
did not know of it. Not because it is
’, but because it is so very old and
was lost sight of during the "dark
ages” for ilfteen centuries before
Brother Wesley was born. He was
feeling after it, yearning for it; hun
gering and thirsting for It, but the
‘due time” for It to be made known
to God’s people had not yet come in
Brother Wesley’s day. He preached
the eternal torture of all mankind, ex
cept the sanctified believers in Jesus
the Savior. But in his preaching of
the love of God he was used of the
Almighty to wondrously prepare the
hearts of Christendom for the broader
message of the Bible now due to be
seen and understood. Wesley’s Gos
pel of the love of God has mellowed
the heart of Christendom, which once
was frigid under the cold teachings
of Foreordination, Predestination, etc.,
of tbe Westminster Confession of
Faith—once the basis of nearly all
Protestant Communions.
If we and our Methodist brethren
could maintain the same degree of
spiritual warmth that Wesley and their
forefathers enjoyed wo might do with
out further instruction.. But we can
not do this I None can stand still!
Christians today are losing their holi
ness, their sanctification-their seal for
God is giving place to zeal for a sect
The light of the Millennial morning
tlon of human Evolution, which denies
the fall of our race and makes void
Christ's redemptive work and the glori
ous result thereof—human restitution
(Acts Hi, 19-23).
Bury the Ossd Past.
God forbid that we should bury any
of the doctrines of Christ and his
twelve apostles! On the contrary let
us strive to resurrect these from the
rubbish of human traditions which
eighteen centuries have plied upon
them. Let us instead bury our man
made creeds, of. which we are all
ashamed. Our Presbyterian friends
some years ago set a noble example to
all Christendom in the burial of their
Confession of Faith and their substitu
tion Instead of a much simpler aud
much more rational statement
But No, I must correct myself here.
This is what they should have done
hut did not do. Instead of burying tbe
old creed, not only from sight but also
from odor, th6y have merely covered
the corpse which is admitted to be
dead and placed the briefer and better
Confession atop the winding-sheet
They assuredly declare that it is not
a substitute hut merely a representative
statement Hence every time we read
the re statement, we must hold our
noses to avoid contamination from the
odors of the carcass beneath. Not
all must do this, for, as the Apos
tle suggests, All have not their senses
exercised to discern. But ail intelll
gent Presbyterians are being rapidly
driven not only away from Calvinism,
but, alas, away from the Bible also,
because of their erroneous supposition
that the teaching of Calvin and the
teachings of the Bible are one and tbe
same.
These bright minds are uot merely
lost to the Christian forces. They be
come active agents in the promulga
tion of anti-Blbllcal teachings. They
engaged in pulling down the Bible
and substituting for its teachings Dar
win’s Evolution theory. These sincere
men are to be found in the faculties of
all of the Colleges, in the highest pul
pits throughout the land and In the
most prominent positions In business
and social life. Their loss of faith in
the Bible has not made them murder
ers or thieves. Their noble inheritance
from the past preserves to them'an up
rightness of character which the loss
of a fear of hell-tormfent has not under
mined. While they are no longer
Chrlstlafis from the Bible standpoint—
—O I tot, our text Jo,boa perceived that
'the Iiraelltea were lu a trying position
| end that lt waa their duty to decide
promptly end thoroughly which course
take. So we may see to
day that Christians of all denomina
tions are in a trying position aud that
a prompt decision to stand by God and
the Bible Is tbe necessary thing for
those who would be delivered from tUe
darkness of the past aud arold falling
Into the Adversary’s great deception of
tbe present-into which their leaders
are guiding them. Unless they heed
speedily, tbe blind leading the blind
will fall into the ditch of Darwinism
and tbe mire of Higher Criticism.
There are not many ways to escape
this threatening calamityl There Is
only one way—the. Bible way. Many
Baptist and Disciple ministers are be
coming awake to the inconsistencies of
their positions and drifting without
foreknowledge of where their course
will end. For Instance, 1 have before
me tbe words of tbe Rev. Dr. Mac Don
aid of my own city, Brooklyn, on Feb
ruary 27th. This gentleman speak.-
the Baptist Confession of Faith
u these swaddling clothes of an ancient
dogmatism." And respecting the Bap
tist doctrine which recogulzes ouly Im
mersed persons as members of the
Church of Christ and heirs of sal
tlon, he says, “Henceforth it can be
garded to be as dead as the cities of
Sodom and Qomorroh, and as worthllg
buriedTbe geutlemau rejoiced that
recently a Baptist minister had beeu
ordained to the Sixth Aveuue Baptist
Church of Brooklyn who affirmed lu
advance that he would invite all to
commuulon and Church membership
who loved the Lord Jesus. He urged
that "associate memlters’’ should be
received Into Baptist commuulous
'Without imposing baptism upou
them."
This courageous brother fulls to
wherein the course lie advocates is
illogical. What be needs to see is tlie
real teaching of the Bible ou the sub
ject of Baptlsm-tliat it is baptism into
Christ’s death, and thus into tbe real
Church of Christ—not the Baptist
Church, uor any other hitman organiza
tion, but the Church of God—"The
Church of the firstborns, whose uarues
are writteu iu heaven.” That roil con
tains the names of all the saiutly,
faithful, cousecrated believers in the
Redeemer—of all denominations and
outside of all denomluatious.
"Sanctify Them Through Thy Truth,
It is not sufficient that we get rid of
the errors aud superstitions of the
past We must supplant those with
the Truth, that f\Ve may be able to
withstand in this evil day" (Epbesia
13). It alone will constitute the
armor of God. Christian people hold
much precious Truth, but hold it iu
so illogical and confused a manner
that it fails to give them tbe needed
strength. God permitted us to come
to this very hour and has permitted
the present tests for the purpose of
developing the characters of the "Is-
raeUtes Indeed, in whom is no guile,"
and for the purpose of gathering out
from them all the tares, all the chaff,.
breaking upon the world, stimulat
ing thought In every direction, makes
necessary for our Methodist breth
ren, as well as for us all, to awaken
the wonderful privileges of our dty
for Bible study: to ascertain the real
teachings of God's Word, which, in the
dark past we all seemingly misunder
stood and misrepresented. Already the
most Intelligent one-fourth of Meth
odism not ouly rejects Brother Wes
ley's theory, but bias, repudiates the
Bible also! It accepts Instead of Sal
vation that most dangerous form of
Infidelity known as Higher Criticism
and that most uri-Scrlptural proposl-
Jesus as a great Teacher and a noble
Leader of men. They fail to discern
the fact that if he posed as the Son
of God and the Redeemer of men, and
was not such, Instead of being a noble
example, his life and teachings were
most stupendous frauds and decep
tions.
Baptists and Disciples Awakening.
When we say that this awakening
is also reaching our Baptist and our
Disciple brethren, let it not be under
stood to mean that all of these have
been asleep until now. Perhaps It
would have been better for them If
some who have gotten awake during
the past thirty years had slumbered
longer. Those long awake hare prin
cipally gone off into Darwinism and
Higher Criticism. Baptist and Disci
ple schools and Colleges and Theolog
ical Seminaries, like those of other de
nominations, are manned with the
brightest minds of the denominations,
and all with one accord teaching High
er Criticism, Infidelity and Darwinian
Evolution. With one accord all are
engaged in overthrowing the Christian
Faith of tbe rising generation. They
are doing this Intelligently, wisely,
cunningly, but not with evil motive.
Having gotten awake to the Inconsist
encies of their creeds these scholarly
men, concluding that the creeds truth
fully represented the Bible, sbsndoned
faith In the Scriptures to the same de
gree that they have abandoned faith
In the creeds which their intellects
have repudiated. Now they are seek
ing to gradually help Christian people
of all denominations to what they con
sider the higher plane of Truth. What
they have-almost anything In fact—
Is better than the "creeds" they have
repudiated. They are working hard
and succeeding well In Introducing
their falth-deetroying theory into the
minds of the rising generation through*
the school books. From these they
not only have eliminated everything
sympathetic with Bible faith, but In
the atead have introduced tbe sub-
verslve doctrine of Evolution.
As for the rank and file of Beptlsts
and Disciples, probably three-fourths
of them still hold vaguely and indefi
nitely to the Bible and their Confes
sions of Faith though both of these
denominations In their tnnocency of
mind think that they have no creeds—
that they take the. Bible only. As
these dear friends awaken to the in
consistencies of their Confession and
teachings they are in greet danger of
following their leaders Into a repudia
tion of everything pertaining to tho
past—into Higher Criticism-Infidelity
and Darwinism.

Son. Let me now briefly summarize
the errors of our creeds and briefly In
dicate I lie Bible remedy.
None of our Creeds were too strict
i defining tbe saintliness of the
Church class, invited to become tbe
Bride of Christ and his .loiut-helrs in
bla Kingdom. On the contrary, in
many respects they were too loose—
they were not ueurly up to the stand
ard of tho Master’s word, "If any man
will bo my disciple, let him take up
his cross and follow me." "Strait is
the gate and narrow the way which
leadeth unto life; and few ther
that find it" (Matthew vii, H». Jesus
taught that his followers must drink
Of his Clip of suffering mul he baptised
into his death—and not merely into wa
ter. Our too-low standards hav
mltted to membership In all denomina
tions millions who are fur below the
Master’s standards.
Our error and deception was the sup
position that all who ure not suintly,
all who would uot become tbe Bride of
Christ, all who are not baptized into bis
death, all who do not drink of his cup
of Ignominy will lie cternaltg tortured.
This great mistake common to all
Protestants (and lu the much modi
fled form of Purgatory shared also by
Catholics) must be displaced by tbe
Bible teaching that as soon as the
elect Church shall be completed and
glorified the autltyplcal Year of Jubi
lee will begin; that then for tbe thou
sand years of the reign of Christ aud
the Church us the spiritual Seed of
Abraham, the non elect, of all the fatn
files of the earth will be blest by the
elect (Galatians 111, 10, 29; Acts ill,
19-23). Let us, dear brethren, choose
this day to stand by the Word of God,
to reject all human traditions coutrary
to it and to hold fast the things that
are true, just, loving, good.
If occasionally a thoughtless friend
asks, Why do you believe In a Millen
