Tilbotton's New Postmaster.
VV. O. Delquch, a prosperous
merchant ot Tailw»tton, lias been
appointed pi,st master at t hut place.
A negro named Douglas had re¬
ceived the endorsement of the re¬
publicans, and his chances were
good for receiving the appointment
but. after the lynching of Dr„Ry
der the negro withdrew from the
contest. After ull there may be
some good in lytichings.
Only One Thing Wrong.
A friend of ours, iy sjieaking of
the News a few days ago, said :
“t sw only one thing wrong
’ with now,”
your,puper
This remark naturally put us to
thinking. The fact that u private
citizeti could acts only one tiling
wxong with the News, and know¬
ing as we did thut he was a close
observer, caused us to inquire whut
that one thiug Wiu>, promising that
we would use <tur best endeavors to
bring abi/ut a remedy for the trou¬
ble.
“Well,” said he, “our home
merchants do not advertise in its
columns as they should. They are
not doing whuf they might towards
its support, and are not as liberal
in their patronage as they should
be.”
Said Jie, “Every business man,
and every professional man in
town ought to have an advertise
ment in your paper.“
Of course we agreed with him in
this particular, and we trust that
cm man doing business - here,
though it be on a small seslit, will
lakethe wine view that our friend
did, and give us an advertisement
of their business. It will be but a
small outlay compared to the in
crease jt will bring you.
Try it. Advcrlise liberally, and
show to the world that your busi
ness is no drag and your town is
not dead.

At last the appointment of a
postmaster for Athens has been
made, and Pink Morton is the suc¬
cessful man.
• This does not please the people
of Hie Classic City, and if rumors
are true, Morton may not be post
master very long. He is a very
impudent mulatto, and is the father
of a great deal oY trouble which
arises among the negroes of our
sister city.
It had been hoped that Postmas¬
ter O’Farrell could retain the office,
but McKinley has in more than one
instance shown his preference for
the negro.
The good people of Athens have
a right to feel indignant about the
appointment, and if Pink Morton
is ever seen flouting down the Oco¬
nee river it will not be a surprise to
us.
The post office will, in all proba¬
bility be managed by negroes, thus
making it unsafe and unpleasant
for ladies to even enter the office to
mail a letter or buy a stamp.
The admfnjstration of President
McKinley is disgusting in all its
details.
Grand Free Show and Lecture.
This afternoon Professor Hucka
bay. the funny American Elocu¬
tionist and Lecturer, will give a
free show on the school house lot,
und everybody are invited to come
out.
Some of the most daring feats on
record will be performed on a slen¬
der wire only three-eighths of an
inch in thickness. The show in
the afternoon will be free to all,
and it will interest all who witness
it.
To-night an entertuinment will
be given hi the large tent, and
Prof, lluckuhay will interest all
who attend with his wonderful pc
culiuriiic* of tlie human voice.
Ventriloquism and mimicry will
lie the main features of the enter¬
tainment, und he will produce
sounds with amuziug accuracy and
distinctness ut the immense distance
of 300 yards.
The lecture on the Wonderful
Scknico of Natural Magic will both
instruct and amuse the audience,
und will be strictly moral in every
particular. So bring your wives
and children to the free show this
afternoon, und then you will hear
all about the lecture to-night.

A Negro Child, a Wagon and
a Mule.
A few days since Mr. Joe Co

in his back yard a mule and wagon
and in the wagon was a little negro
girl about six yeurs old.

about the owners of the property
or who the child was. So he noti

FLANAGAN ON TRIAL.
Murderer of Mrs. Allen and
Miss Slack Before the
Bar of Justice.
: Edward C. Flanagan was put on
trial for his life at Decatur, Ga.,
Monday morning in the DeKalb su
perior court.
1 ^ ere was a big crow d in Decatur,
but little excitement and very little
talk of lynching, as the people
seemed to have faith in the court.
Flanagan will first have to answer
for the murder of Mrs. Nancy Allen.
His other victim was Miss Ruth
Slack.
Flanagan’s leading attorney made
a determined but unsuccessful effort
to obtain a change of venue. He
attempted to show that the state of
the public mind in DeKalb county
was so intense against 1* hinagan
that it would be impossible to secure
a fair and impartiaUtrial for him.
The motion for a change of venue,
however, was successful combat
ted by the prosecution and Judge
Candler ordered the trial to P ro *

The trial has on all

going to press it looks very much
like a mistrial may be made.

Mr. Eeitor :—Please allow me
spMCe | n your valuable columns to
correct an erroneonsstatement made
by t |, e Jackson Herald in its issue
of in which it says :
• » Jefferson basebull team defeat¬
ed the Bogart team last Friduy at
this placc . Score 16 to 10.”
In the first place, the Bogart
team did not go to Jefferson, only
^ wo members of the team went »
and they played with another team,
Secondly, There was no game pluy
ed. as it takes five innings to be
called a game, and only two in
liings were played. The rain
broke up the game ut theend of the
second inoing.
Thus the Herald has placed us in
un untrue light, and we desire the
statement of the Herald to be cor
reeled.
