notsecluded in any way ffotn public gate,

acteristics of a monastic institution. The
ladies who reside there us teachers are high-
|y cultivated tod iOCoinpiiAwt w* ** inucn
entitled to respect and oourte-y as any in
the State. Their pupils are likewise ie-pcc-
»»Kln and there is not the least evidence
that their attendance at school is forced,
that they are subjected to any rigorous dis
cipline, or obliged to undergo any sort of
ilftreatmont. ... ,
Such being the character of this establish
ment, the seven ladies residing therein were
surprised on last Monday afternoon to see
two omnibuses drive up to tbs doors, crow
ded with passengers, who alight and inquired
for the “lady superior,” and being met by
the head of the establishment, the spokes
men of the party informs her that the crowd
is a committee appointed by the legislature
to examine the house. No notification ot
the visit to be expected has been served
upon the ladies, and they are obliged to
take the statement of members of the party
on their own authority. We have already
seen that the Committee actuall appointed
by the legislature consists of but seven
members. We are unable to state the num
ber of the party professing to act as this
committee on this ocotwion, but from the
fact that two twelvenseat omnibuses, which
appeared to be full, were required for their
transport, we can only estimate their num
ber at twenty-four. There may have been
a few mure or less.
Nineteen laides. twelve of them less than
fifteen years «.f age, could not. of course,
oppose any effectual obstacle to the enter-
ance of twenty-four full grown men into a
common bouse, even had the ladies known
the rights guaranteed them by the constitu
tion and laws of Massachusetts, and had
they been disposed to maintain those rights
by force. The “gentlemen”—we presume
we must call members of the Legislature by
this title—roamed over the whole house
from attic to cellar. No chamber, no pas
sage, no closet, no cupboard, escajied their
vigilant search. No part of the house was
enough sacred or enough protected by the
respect for common couriesies of civilized
life to be spread in the examination. The
ladles’ dresses hanging in their wardrobes
were tossed over: The party invaded the
chapel, and showed tlie.r re-pact—as Pro
testants, we presume—for the One (bid
whom all Christians worship, by talking
loudly with their haw on. while tho hid e*
shrank in terror at the Je-eeratioii of a i-po:
which they believe hallowed.
While in the chapel the ladies declined
holding any conversation w:th their perse
cutors ; but in another part of the uou-e
the principal expressed her perfect willing-
lio*H to answer any questions propounded
hv'Mie c iiuuiitteo.’ O.ieof “the gentlemen "
accordingly pats her affectionately on the
back with one hand, turn* over tho rosary
suspended round her neck with the other,
and asks her if she is content with her sit
uation. whether she can leave when she
pleases. The young lad es we e, of course,
subjected to questions even more rude—
whether there are any boys boarding in the
establishment—what punishments they suf
fer for misdeiuoanors, &c. It is scarcely
necessary to describe such conversation m
detail; the reader can readily imagine wha
the scene must have been.
The examining party, of course, had eve
rything their own way. and when their
searches aud their insults had been protract
ed to the extent of their pleasure they took
their leave. It is scarcely necessary to say
that “they found—no matter what, it was
not what they sought"—unless the object of
the visit wo» simply a “lark” at the expense
of the State, in which case the object was
doubtless attained. Thera were no nuns
immured alive tn contracted cells, nor any
evidences of abuse of any sort calling for
legislative interference or even inquiry.
Now, we ask the reflecting men and wo
men of Massachusetts—we even appeal to
tho candor of 80,(100 voters who put the
present administration in power—is such a
record as the above tit to form a page in the
history of tho free and enlightened common
wealth of Massachusetts in the 19th een-
tuary? Make any allowance you please for
exaggerations in the story which may have
beon caused by the natural fears of the tor-
rifiod witnesses, and docs the record stand
fair and clear? Is such the treatment that
defenceless women ought to receive? Is
such the behavior of gentlemen in the leg
islature? It is only paralleled by the sto
ries that have come down of tho insults and
excesses of unlicensed soldiers in time of
war.—Bouton Advertiser.

FEVER AND AGUE CURE,
Or, Nature’■ Invaluable Specific,
F OR the prevention and cure of Intermittent and
Remittent Fever*, Fever and Ague, Chill* and
Fever, Dumb Ague, General Debility, Night
Sweats, and all other forms of disease which have
a common origin iu Malaria or Miasma. The nub-
tie atmospheric poison which at certain seasons is
unavoidably inhaled at every breath, ia the same
in character wherever it exists,—North, South.
East or West,—and will every where yield to this
newly discovered antidote, which is claimed to be
the greatest discovery in medicine ever made.
This specific is so harmless that it may be taken
by person* of every age, *ox or condition and it
will not substitute for one disease others still
worse, as is too often the result in the treatment by
Quinine, Mercury, Arsenic, and other poisonous or
deleterious drugs, not a particle of any of which
is admitted into this preparation.
The proprietor distinctly claims these extraoidi-
nary result* from the use of this natural antidote
to Malaria.
It will entirely protect any resident or traveler
even in the most sickly or swampy localities, from
any Ague, or Bilious disease whatever, or any in
jury from constantly inhaling Malaria or Miasma.
It will instantly check the Ague in persons who
have suffered for any length of time, from ono day
to twenty years, so that they need never hove
another chill, by continuiug its use according to
directions.
It'will immediately relieve all distressing results
of Billious or Ague disease, such as general debil
ity, night sweats, Ac. The patient at once begins
to recover appetite and strength, and con'inues
until a permanent and radical cure is effected.
Finally, its use will banish Fever and Ague
from families nnd oil classes. Farmers and nil
laboring men by adopting it ns a preventive will
be free from Ague or Billious attacks in that sea
son of the year which, while it is the most sickly,
is the most valuable one to them.
Oae or two bottles will answer for ordinary cas
es, some may require more.
Directions printed in German,French and Spau-
islt. accompany each bottle.
Prico One Dollar. Liberal discounts made to

Trade circulars fowarded on application, nnd the
article will bo consigned on liberal terms to re

CONSUMPTION
SUCCESSFULLY TIIEATED BY INHALATIOX OF VESI
CATED VAPOK3.
B Y JOHNSON STEWART ROSE, M. D.,
Fellow of tho Royal College of Physicians,
and for years Senior Physician in the ’ London
Royal Infirmary for diseases of the Lungs.
In the treatment of Consumption by inhalation,
I bavo obtained the results which warrant me in
asserting, that it is now as curable as diseases of
tho Stou.Tch and Liver.
Bret thing medicine directly into tho lungs f#
certainly the rational mode of attacking the dis
ease, and like many other great and benificent dis
coveries, it seems strange why such treatment was
not resorted to long ago. Where there is life there
is now assured hope for the meat seemingly hope
less cases, as throughout all tbe stages of tbe in
sidious disease, tho wonderful and benificent ef
fect! of his treatment are soon apparent. Id *a-
ses also ot Bronchitis, Asthma, etc., tho inhaling
of powder* and vapors has been eminently suc
cessful, and to there suffering under any of tho
above named complaints, I can gurrantec speedy
and certain relief. I have pleasure in referring to
207 names, residents of New Y'ork and Neighbor
hood, who have been restored to vigorous health.
About one third of tho above number, according to
the patients own statements, were considered hope
less cases.
The Inhaling Method is soothing, safe, and
cousists in the administration of medicine in such
a manner that they are conveyed into the Lungs
in the form of vapor, and produce their action at
the sent of the disease. Its practical success is
destined to revolutionize the opinions of the medi
cal world, and establish the entire curability of
consumption.
Applicants will please state if they have eTer
bled from the Lungs, if they have lost flesh, have
a cough, night sweats and lover turns—what and
how much they expectorate, what the condition
of thoir stomach and bowels. Tho necessary Med
icine?, Apparatus, etc., will be forwarded to any
part.
TERMS—Five Dollars, consultation fee. Bal
ance of fee payable only when patients report
themselves convalescent.
N. B.—The new postage law, requires that all
letters be pre-pa id. My correspondence being
