, presides over its deliberations, and i
the tact and talent evinced by him in hie calm and l
self-possessed manner . in meeting the intricate 1
points of law presented by the very able counsel in
attendance, prosecuting tho suits in Court. It is
true that Governor H. V. Johnson has committed,
in tho opinion of hostile critics, many blunders,
but the appointment of his Houor, Judgo B.> to
the Judgeship, can not be recorded against him os
one; but this, on tho contrary, will have a tenden
cy of redeeming him-from the denunciations ful
minated against him hitherto. The people in my
estimation, should seize upon the favorable oppor
tunity now presented, (if ho will consent to serve
them,) of appropriating to their uso the talents
which he possesses. His abilities, severity of man
ner, and ready knowledge of the Law, points him
out absolutely as the man to meet the emergencies
of the times, and if passed by, (as I have learned
he was on a former occasion,) it must result great
ly to the detriment of the circuit, and will be re
corded among the follies of popular elections. In
this instance, I will saj without disparaging the
claims of others, that you cannot do better than
indorse the appointment of your Governor. I
have never seen business dispatched with greater
ease, dispatch and facility, and at the same time
with so much pleasure to tho bar and suitors, as
has been done this week, and I havo been in at
•rnment was finally decided to put an end
to ft barbarous institution which all ciril-
ited nations condemned, and which M. Lu-
suriign did not fear to call a pest and a
shame to humanity.”
This, we have no doubt, is really tho final
moire of the Spanish Government, and
although such a tremendous blow &3 this at
the social existence of the Island, as well as
at its material resources, cannot fail to
arouse the most intense interest throughout
tho United States, we yet believe that this
does not constitute, by many removes, the
most startling significance of the proposed
abolition of Slavery in Cuba. To our Gov
ernment it means that England and France
are dictating to Spain her State policy
wherever we are to be affected by it, and
that our diplomacy will not be allowed to
ignore the supremacy of Anglo-Gallic in
fluence at the Court of Madrid. It means^
again, that one of two things shall faappeh;
—either that a hive of black savages right
upon the track of our gulf commerce is to
be upheld by a powerful European protec
torate to annoy us eternally, or that Cuba
•hall, before her annexation to our Union,
be prepared for this event by the interposi
tion of those who are the deadliest foes to
the Southern States.
We have never seriously before now be
lieved, that Spain really entertained the
purpose of Afracanizing Cuba. If it is
ever done the abolition power of the North
ern States will move heaven and earth if
Cuba is not annexed to this Union. Ten
thousand overwhelming arguments, will oc-
cur to tbe minds of aboltion statesmen, why
it should be done, and done, sooner or later
it will be and by free soil votes. In view
of this event we have nothing left for it but
to take things into our own hands while wo
can at all impress the action of our Govern
ment by Southern influences. As a civiliz
ed State, we are os opposed to the absorption
of Cuba as we can be to any thing. It is
an abuse of language to say that by
any possibility or to any material degree,
Cuba can be absorbed by our people. She
mightbe incorporated into our Union itistrue,
but she would lay upon us to the end, an
unassimilated mnss of crude, unavailable
elements.
But any thing before a nigger kingdom
juat at our door and that door our Southern
one. We are for war first—for a filibuster
ing descent upon the Island—for a seizure
by the General Government—for almost any
thing with tho least sanity in it, before we
can talk about tolerating such a hell above j Postnmster General to inform you that'here-

Messrs. Editors, I have learned a report that
one Warner Lyons of vour place, a day or two
since, took out Bail Process against his son Jes6e,
and has incarcerated him in prison for debt, which
I think cannot be true, ns it shows a total want of
parental regard on his part, andrevcalstooplainly
tho fact, that this is an age of downwnrd progress,
and increase in inoro than savage principles.—
There is no beast that will feast and fatten upon its
kind whilst life throbs through their pulsating
veins, much less would they on their own offspring.
With one single exception, which is the hog, who
never does so in a state of nature, but in some few
instances has been known to do so, when after a
long association with man, has become corrupted
by keeping bad company. I bring this to your
knowledge, that if it is untrue, that you may dis
abuse tho public mi’-tl, and wash that infamous
stain from the dwellings of your young and thriv
ing city. If true, hold up the person and the act
to tho scorn and contempt of nil enlightened mor
al and religious community. Let him know that
he shall act and' demean himself as a human being
so long as he wears the human form divine, wheth
er ho possesses any of the principles that consti
tute and make up the man or no;, as not to out
rage tho community in which he lives, and bring
disgrace by developing principles which devils
themselves would blush to own. Or let him prick
up his nssinine ears to hear tho intonating thunder
of the press, speaking forth the lightning like cen
sures of those whom he disgraces by his associa
tion. I will cease for fear of intruding too much
on your time, as well ns the patience of your rea
ders.
I remain, your obedient servant,

There has long existed a public demand for ar
t lfective purgative pill which could be relied on of
■hire and perfectly safe in its operation. This hat
wen prepared to meet that demand, and an exten
<;ve trial of its virtues has cwnclnsirely shown with
what success it accomplishes the purpose designed
it is easy to make a physical pill, but not easy tc
make the best of all pills—one which should have
tone of the objections, but all the advantages, of
every other. This has been attempted here, and
| with what success we would respectfully submit tc
I the public decision.' It has been unfortunate for
; the patient hitherto that almost every purgative
j medicine is acrimonious and irritating to the bow-
j els This is not. Many of them produce so much
1 griping pain nml revulsion in the system :is to more
; than counterbalance the good to he derived from
i the.m. These pills produce no irritation or. pain,
i unless it arise from a previously existing obstruc-
i tion or derangement in the bowels. Being purely
vegetable, no harm can arise from their use in any
quantity ; but it is better that any medicine should
' be taken judiciously. Minute directions for their
I use in the several diseases to which they are ap-
I plieable are given on the box. Among the com-
• plaints which have been speedily cured by them, we
1 mav mention Liver Complaint, in its various forms
| of .inundice. Indigestion, Languor and Loss of Ap-
! uetitc, Listlessness, Irritability, Bilious Headache,
: Bilions Fever, Fever and Agile, Pain in the Side

j inn and Scurvy, Colas with soreness of the body,

snd everv case where a purgative is required.
They have also produced some singularly suc-
i eessfui cures in Rheumatism, Gout, Dropsy. Gravel,
i Erysipelas, Palpitation of the Heart. P:iins in the
Back, stomach, and Side. They should be freely
‘ taken in the spring of the year, to purity the blood
1 and prepare the system for the change of seasons.
An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and

Ask tor Hampton’s Vegetable Tincture. The many
'jures made by this pleasant and safe remedy may in-
counterfeiting.
\ Medicine must have merit and great merit too,
to stand the test of public opinion. No art of puffing
•*n galvanize a worthless article, so as to keep it up as
«. good medicine if it be not really so.
A good medicine will live, become popular, and ex
tend its sale* year after year, in spite of opposition.—
The people w ; ll readily find out virtues, and the fame of
’hem passes from mouth to mouth with more rapidity
'ban newspapers can spread it. A living witness testi-
•ying to tlie cure a medicine has made for him is of
far more service than any newspaper advertising.
In proof of what we say above, we reier you to Hamp

I consider your Tincture the greatest discovery of the

pain. And you. gentlemen, have acted the part of pub
lic benefactors in disseminating the benefits which
have resulted from your invaluable remedy.
