such a transposed and mutilated shape as
almost to destroy it* intelligibility. We
have strong reason to believe that some
person evilly disposed towards ue, enter

made up. We republish the letter thi*

Praiseworthy Liberality,
The Columbus Enquirer states that two
citizens of Russell co., Ala., Richard Buo-
banan and B. Ingraham, fc'sq., have divided
their entire surplus corn among their neigh
bors $1 a bushel, and instances on cred\£ at
that. We take pleasure in adding that
Messrs. John Darby, Aaron S. Smith and
John W. Allgood, of Cobb county, as we
are informed, did the same tiling when the
price was $1.40 a bushel. One of these
gentlemen would sell to no one person
more than five bushels at a time that hi*
poorer neighbors might be benefitted as far
as possible. Such men have hearts in the
right place.
A Noble Example.
The Presbyterian Church of Marietta, af
ter raising a considerable amount of money
for building their new and commodious
brick church, found a debt of about ?2,500
remaining. At a recent meeting, we under
stand that members agreed that an assess
ment should be made upon them in propor
tion to their property, referring to the tax-
book if necessary, and that they would then
pay off the church debt. We do not re
member having ever before known this
principle of contributing according to mean*
and ability adopted and carried out by any
body of Christians or others.
It is the correct principle, and the church
thus acting has set an example worthy to
be followed in other parts of our laud, and
by all denominations.
Georgia Military Institute.
We call attention to the notice of the ex
amination and commencement exercises of
the Georgia Military Institute. We are
gratified to learn that Capt. Thos. R. Mc
Connell, of the U. S. Army, has accepted a
professorship in this Institute. He will re
sign his commission in the army at once,
and outer upon the discharge of his new
duties in July. Capt. McConnell is a
Georgian. Ho graduated at the D. S. Mili
tary Academy in 1840. He was promoted
for gallant and meritorious conduct in the
battle of Molino Del Rey, Mexico, and for
the last four years has been Adjutant of tha
4th Regiment, U. S. Infantry.

CHANGE OF OFFICE.
It is a general rule, one from which my
observation furnishes but few exceptions,
that when a man remains in office for a
long period he becomes tired, and to some
extent careless of its duties aud require
ments, until lie feels, eventually, with less
concern the duties which rest upon him.— |
There is a vigilance and promptness in the |
judges of the Superior Courts of Ceorgia, j
the want of which in the succeeding years j
is the source of much annoyance and just j
discontent among the people who are the j
sufferers by it. This, in connection with
the fact that we have upon the Bench in the
Bin* Ridge Circuit a man who although a
clever gentleman, the correctness of whose
decisions we concede for the sake of argu

cally deficient as proven by facts under the
observation of all, we regard as sufficient
