DEAR
ABBY
Gay Rights Bill Introduced
In Congress
by special permission from
Abigail Van Burean
Dear Abby: My friend
and I have a different of
opinion. He says Damon
and Pythias were homo
sexuals. I say they were
straight. Can you checkthis
out and let us know?
C and B
Dear C AND B: I wrote to
twelve leading universities.
Their responses included
yesses, noes and maybes.
I think the Chairman of
the English Department at
the University of Chicago
summed it up very well:
igP?. ,
“DEAR ABBY: You asked
if Damon and Pythias were
gay In dealing with charac -
ters of such remote anti
quity. who exist more in the
realm of legend, it is some
times difficult to find much
evidence on the most in
timate details of their pri
vate lives:
Damon and Pythias
were famous for their de
votion to each other, and
they were Greeks. Beyond
that. I think whatever they
did was pretty much their
own business, and even it
I knew. I wouldn't say.
"One less than eminent
authority said to me: 1
think Damon was okay, but
I'm not so sure about Py
thias.”

Democratic Party Chairmaa
Appologizes!
“Well, if that isn’t the
biggest collection of fags I’ve
ever seen in my life,” is a
typical “fashionably Texas”
putdown greeting he uses to
greet acquaintances. The
speaker: Robert' Strauss,
National Chairman of the
Democratic Party, quoted in
the Washington Post’s Poto
mac magazine by Myra
MacPherson on January 5.
“What might sound like
colorful, original talk to the
unitiated is ordinary socializ
ing back home in Texas,” say
MacPherson. And extraordi
narily insensitive bigotry to
the ears of gay people.
Rev. Jim Snow, Asst. Pastor
of the Atlanta MCC, wrote to
Strauss criticizing Strauss use
of the word fag. Strauss
apologized to Rev. Snow as we
are sure he will have to
apologize to the many others
who have critisized him for
such statements.

The term ‘‘affectiorial or
sexual preference” is defined
in HR-166 as “having or
manifesting an emotional or
physical attachment to another
consenting person or persons
of either gender: or having or
manifesting a preference for
such attachment.” The phrase
was originated by Jack Baker
of Minneapolis, and appears in
both the Minneapolis and the
St. Paul gay rights laws that
passed in 1974.
1 lie phrase has won support
from gay movement and
feminist groups, who see it as
a way of protecting the heart of
our gayness--the choice to love
whom we love, to be with
whomever we choose, to say
we’re gay and to express
affection as openly as
heterosexuals do. Our rela
tionships and our lifestyles,
yot just our private sexuality,
deserve and need protection.
The National Gay Task
Force urges that all groups
working on gay rights
legislation consider using the
phrase ” a fleet ion a 1 prefer
ence.”

Judge Rules Nude
Sunbath ing O.K.!
Hollywood, Fla.: Charged
with indecent exposure after
his arrest for nude sunbathing 1
near Dania Beach, a 26-year-
old Fort Lauderdale man has^
been acquitted. County Court
Judge James R. Holmes
directed a verdict of not guilty,
after a brief non-jurv trial, on
the grounds that “bare
nakedness” is not indecent
exposure. Th# young man was
arrested by Hollywood police
as he lay nude in a wooded
area just west of the beach, a
quarter-mile north of the
Dania Pier, and was charged
with two counts of indecent
exposure, but Judge Holmes
ruled that mere nude
sunbathing is not indecent
under Florida law. The Judge
said that if the city of
Hollywood wants to prohibit
people from nude sunbathing
the city should pass an
ordinance to that effect. The
city does have an ordinance
prohibiting nude bathing, but
since the young man was not
applying any water to this
body, the Judge concluded
that he was not bathing.
Holmes added “It is a shame
to know of all the crime going
on in cities now and yet see
valuable police officers' time
being taken up for a case like
this.”
