THE BARB-5
JUNE B.O.A. MEETING
The Bar Owner’s .Association
held an open meeting on June
23H. The following. 1 is a brief
sketch of what happened at that
meeting. ; . : '
The first order of business was
the renaming of the Organization,
by which it is hoped to give the
general public a clearer con
ception of the group’s purpose.
The name selected by the
Executive Committee to replace
Bar Owners’s Association was
Concerned Citizens League.
When the name w^s questioned
BOA Chairperson Jack Campbell
said that CCL “hais a reputable
connotation.”
Considerable debjate as to what
an appropriate naipe should be
ensued. Community Action
League and Commiinity Potential
were among fhe names
suggested. It was the unanimous
decision of the! Executive
Committee not to u&e the word
‘gay’ in the new naitye in order to
show the organisation’s in
volvement in the total community
and not just the 'homosexual
segment of the population.
It was decided that names
should be submitted r to .thei
Executive Committee! which will
then select three fo^ the mem
bership to vote on. Mr. Von
.Popper said that the Nook Bar
would award a $25.(^0 prize for
the name that is accepted.
The Political Action! Committee
announced that they are training
more registrars that more
voter registration fafcilities may
be set-up in shopping centers.
They are planning a con
stitutional test of the jtatute used
in the arrest Kelly and McVay,
in district court. >
l
The Political Action! Committee
also reported that Aclu Florida
has offered to begin a committee
on sexual privacy j if enough
members volunteer tojjoin.
The Bar Owner’s Cjommittee is
investigating severa) problems
including women’s grievances
and the harrassmenti of bars by
the staffpersons of othjer bars.
One of the problems thej
committee is working to solve 'J
the selling of drugs in thq
women’s restroom. As most
lounges have all male staffs it i$
often a source of emharassment
for an owner or manager when he
must enter the women’s room
upon receiving a report qf'
someone vending drugs there. I
Tony Giordana urged niorie
owners to participate in thje
meetings as they have a definite
:onsciousness raising effect and
develop comradship among the
oar owners.
The bar owners plan to post
signs giving the beverage laws in
order to protect their customers
from potential polide
oarrassment. ! \
Tlie Membership Committed
introduced Madeline Robishaw as
the BOA’s first woman member.
A pageant is to be held in lat<?
September or early October on
Mianu Beach to raise money for
obbying for gay rights at the
state and municipal level.
Joey Lord, the Broward County,
representative, announced that a;
*roter registration drive will bei
field at the Oceanside Holiday Inn j
in Fort Lauderdale on August!
23rd from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The meeting closed with Louise i
Griffin arid Marion Powers of the j
NOW Lesbian Task Force. They I

social and legislative changes in !
