THE
The Ever Shining King
ByI.DROJZ;BUNZ0V
Editor’s Note: The Ever Shhiing King is the first in a series on
famous historical figures who were also gay.
He was born on September 8,
1157, to the redoutable Eleanor of
Acquitaine and the King of
England, Henry AA Plantagenet,
at a small English castle to which
she had retired for her con
finement! This third son of
Eleanor and Henry would grow
into lusty • manhood, become the
ftghting idol of European
chivalry, a popular English king
during his lifetime and a beloved
one later; he would lead the
forces of Christendom to victory
over the might of Islam in the
Holy Land, and die of a battle
wound at the age of 41, to enter
history enshrined for all time in
honor and glory as Richard the
Zion-Hearted.
Yet this powerful king, by
common consent a soldier of
remarkable prowess and con
summate ability, a skillful'
politician, was also a queen. No
less an authority than the
Encyclopaedia Britannica says
“he was, there seems no doubt, a
homosexual.” No doubt indeed!'
Richard was indeed a member of
the group, as have been — and
are — many hundreds of the
influential and productive leaders
of Western history.
During his many conquests,
Richard always found time for
frolic . with the troops. His
lieutenants were sure of the royal
favor, for a time at least, when
from the ranks they could find a
particularly attractive and per
sonable number for the king’s
diversion. We are even told that
frif king preferred tall, well-built
youngsters with heavy, hard
f(ngh.s. He apparently had,
however, no preference between
blondes and brunets.
Richard developed firm
loyalties and in some cases kept
his favorites, who always fought
at his side, among
guard
On a few occasions he was
criticized by his bishops for
carrying his affections for his men
beyond the boutid$$t£ decency.
Richard ignored thdinii, sure of his
power.
In April 1199, while recon-
noitering an insurgent castle in
the Touraine, Richard was struck
in the neck by an arrow shot ftpim
the ramparts. The castle pvenr
tually was taken by Richard’s
forces, and on his death bed,
Richard had the. guilty, archer
brought before him.
The archer was pardonecf by
the king and was made a fine
present. The following morning
the Lion Hearted expired. At the
hands of his personal guard, the
archer was seized, placed on a
spit, and roasted and skinned
alive. Without issue, Richard was
succeeded on the throne by his
profligate brother, John
Lackland, of melancholy fame.
When in France, be sure to
visit the ancient and charming
chateau of Fontevrault, near
Tours, and pay homage at the site
of the remains of the glorious
Richard the Lion-Hearted, the
most famous gay king in all
history.
