PRESENTS ONE OF THE NEW SERIES
MiM ©IF Amm€A
A carpenter’s apprentice perhaps, but to
the sculptor’s eye Slim Jim walked with the
sinewy masculine bearing of a young
prince. Blond and bronze, lean and lithe,
this prince of the hammer and helmet was
destined to become an important figure in
the MEN OF AMERICA.
The essence of rugged male beauty
captured, created ana conceived by the
noted American artist Wayne Hampton.
Individually hand cast. Sandstone finish.'
About fifteen inches tall. Intricate detail.
Thirty-eight dollars post paid.

made of? The bulk of this fiction was
concerned with the lives of certain
gays after a Supreme court decision
rendering discrimination against us
unconstitutionaL As with blacks, the
battles didn’t end, rather they in
tensified. There is a chance that we
stand in fact near such a decision.
Making it legal for us to be (exist)
would mark the beginning of the real
struggle. Gay pride and con
sciousness to this point have been
internal: necessarily for our own
survival. At the moment when we
become legitimate we’ll be terrified,
because then aB of the old defenses
will be worthless. Hiding will become
increasingly pointless, and each of
will eventually reach die point beyond
which resistance, rather than
resignation, will be the only course of
action. National legitimization of
homosexuality will have much farther
reaching consequences than anyone
can envision.
It mav take generations.but as soon

this fear is elusive. One person’s
nationality is another’s cool reason.
Particularly when all are vulnerable,
often merely to refuse to laugh at an
antiGay joke is taken as being “too
aggressive, uppity ”
I look forward to the day when we
will be less anxious to condemn
another for her alleged execesses,
when we will be comfortable enough
without our individual differences to
welcome the gorgeous pluralism that
is already more manifest in our Gay
community than it is in the uptight
nonGay world. An Underground
railroad can be efficient only so long
as each station master knows her own
terrain and every inch of her own
track.
Most of the national and regional
terminals needed for our railroad are
already established and ready to route
our efforts towards efficient
emancipation. Gay caucuses exist in
almost every church, every political
persuasion, every professional
organizations, etc
Legal emancipation is certainly die
most immediate priority. We must
remove the heinous sodomy statutes
in the 37 states still having them,
including all Southern states except
Arkansas. We must press for passage
of the b9 before Congress (H.B.
54S2) which would extend to Gay
persons the protections of the Civil
become not only obvious but
necessary, the principal reason for not
divulging “that” will vanish. A hot
new story in the national press
concerns three NFL starting quar
terbacks who allegedly are or either
bisexual. Add Matt to the tenororth e
times. Include the proposed
Congressional action on gay rights.
Subtract the fashionability of sexual
“switching.” Probably sooner than
later, a few prominent people are
going to refuse to be ruined for
acknowledging their homosexuality,
although the voices will be loud and
harsh. In the midst of the clamor,
hundreds of thousands of fags are
going to say Enough! and leap into
the fray. The country will then have a
choice: Exterminate the Queers (a la
Nazi Germany) or else accept that ten
per cent for what it is and reorder
priorities. The outcome of this
struggle, regardless of its form or
intensity, will change America
forever. Although we are not just
fairies full of love and goodwill, the
integration of whatever unique
qualities gays possess into the fabric
of society, along with ttie negation of
homophobia, will make it .happen.
Besides, . what’s wrong with a few
genuine fairies? As children, many of
us learned to love and respect the
ideal
Get ready America. The bicen
tennial may turn out to be BI in ways
you never before imagined. This-is
NOT a prediction of promiscuity. It is
a promise to love you to your sense, if
you will just let it happen. This is the
only civilized, humane choice you
have
A word to the Editor and my three
readers: This completes a year for me
as a Barb(non) staff person. I have
never been to a meeting, discussed
policy, etc., but I guess that the print
makes me official. In any event, I
appreciate your patience, tolerance,

Rights Act of 1968. We must remove
the dozens of other laws which op
press us, such as those denying Gay
folks access to our own children in
divorce cases, those censoring our
own literature, our very historical
existence from the education and
public communication which we pay
for. On the more positive side, we
must demand that this literature and
history be fended property so that it
can be written. We must demand
adequate medical services from
persons who have been trained to
address special needs of the Gay
community.....
Gay organizations exist to give
ubiquitous witness to our presence, to
our contributions, to our need.
If you are not working on this
railroad, apply today through the Gay
groups working in the areas of your
own greatest taint and interests. You
need these groups even as they need
you. Dr. King used to remind us in an
earlier phase of the dvfl rights
movement that those who go to the
back of the bus perhaps deserve to sit
at the back of the bus. While not
everyone can be a Rosa Parks, we can
establish a donate that respects the
Rosa Parks, which encourages those
who can be Rosa Parks to take our
fast corporate step forus.

Lastly don’t be cute. Funny and
dever ads do not draw. They may be
fen to read, but people answer the
more serious ones.
Also I would like to mention the
possibility of your using a local
Answering Service. If you do net want
certain people to see the increase in
you mai, be bothered with people
ringing your bell at aB hours of the
day and night, or just want to keep
your identity secret for any of a
variety or reasons - then by all means
use a mai service. I do and cannot get
along with out it!
I would suggest and recommend
without reservation Atlanta’s

run by gays for gays and they will give
the best service available in the area.
