Over $60 million worth of
movies opened around the
country on Christmas day, and
damned few of them are worth
the $3 or so it would cost you to
see them.
“Barry Lyndon” is strictly
for aesthetes. It may be the most
beautifully photographed movie
in history, but that's all it is. The
story line, about the life of an 18th
century Irishman (Ryan O'Neal)
who marries a wealthy widow
(Marisa Berenson) is subordinate
to the visual grandeur; so are the
stars, who are just part of the
scenery.
Director Stanley Kubrick
doesn’t miss often; but when he
does.it’s ajulul
Burt Reynolds tans have two
choices, “‘Hustle” and “Lucky
Lady.” Neither comes close to
perfection, but eqch has
something to recommend it.

Minnelli and Gene' Hackman co
starring with Burt but only Liza,
comes off well; and the studio has
trammed too many elements into
toe picture in hopes of protecting
their mammoth investment.
There’s the basic adventure
of th ree in dependent rum runners.
in 1930, caught between the
government and the syndicate.
Then there’s the romance, when
Liza can’t choose between her
partners-for more than one night
at a time.
This might be too heavy; so
oomedy is added-mostly by
having Burt fall down a lot. And
Liza sings a couple of songs.
Whatever you’re looking for,
“Lucky Lady” has enough to
‘whet your appetite, but not
enough to satisfy it. “Hustle” is
an uneven, overlong police
drama; but Reynolds gives his
best performance in it, and has
some sizzling love scenes op*
posite Catherine (Chanel No. 5)
Deneuve.
What takes up so much time
is author Steve (“Save the
Tiger”) Shagan’s compulsion to
inject social comment into every
scene. He makes some good
points, but makes them too often.
There’s no point to “The
Man Who Would Be King”—it’s
just for fun, like the movie epics
they used to make.
Sean Connery and Michael
Caine play soldiers of fortune who
go to the mythical Asian country
of Kafiristan with plans to stage a
coup.
At the first village they visit,
the chief offers them their choice

If you want to mix a bit of
culture with your fan, try Ingmar
Bergman’s“TheMagic Flute.” If
you've never seen an opera but
faink you’d like to, this is a great
way to start. Mozart’s comic work
is light and lyricaL Bergman’s
staging and film thereof make an
enchanting fairy tale.
“The Black Bird” is a
satirical sequel to “The Maltese
Falcon.” The new film is to the
old one somewhat less than the
ratio of their stars, George Segal
to Humphrey Bogart. “Falcon” is
. a classic; “Bird” isn’t,
Neither is “The Adventure of
Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter
Brother,” in which writer-
director-star Gene Wilder tries to
prove he doesn’t need Mel Brooks
to be fanny, That may be so, but
he needs better material than
he’s given himself to work with
here.
Marty Feldman, as a
policeman with photographic
hearing, rises above the script;
Madeline Kahn, in the sexist role
of a woman who can only tell the
truth when she's sexually
aroused, doesn’t.
Manv cities got their first
look at ”*"'«» Day Afternoon” last
month. It you haven’t seen it yet,
put it at the top of your list-it

releases, and Is one of die four
