OPEN AND RECEIVING 1M-
PATIENTS again, for anyone
who’s vaguely interested. ANDY
VARGOSKO, of HOUSTON,
wishing he could find a job and
move to NEW ORLEANS
FOREVER, was rather popular
with the majority of visitors he
met, or so he says. JOHN B’s
MONASTERY ON ESPLANADE
played host to ANDY and his
friend KENNY, both of
HOUSTON, and I lost count of
the dozen or so other
houseguests. The amazing thing
about JOHN B’S MONASTERY
is that I’ve been told it only has
one bed. WHERE DO all those
people SLEEP?

BARB INFO SECTION) IS OUR
SALE REP IN THIS AREA. MY
COMMENTS ARE COM-
PRIMISED NEITHER BY THE
EDITORS FOR THE BARB,
NOR BY ANY MONpTARY IN
FLUENCE. LET IT BE KNOWN
HERE AND NOW THAT I,
PATRICK SHANNON III, AM"
FREE TO PRINT WHAT I WISH
AS I WISH AND WOULD NOT
HAVE IT OTHER WISE, Now
that we’ve squared that away, let
me proceed with my discussion
of the BAR OF THE MONTH,
TRAVIS. It’s mainly a neigh
borhood type place: clean,
friendly, and where a lot of
regulars like : to gather and
gossip, exchange; drinks, do a
little cruising, etc. The bar
tenders, NORMAN, BRYON,
AND ART, know most of the
patrons and vice versa. The
crowd is mostly middle-aged,
established, and living in the
immediate area. This is not to
imply that TRAVIS is a small
bar, au contrair, mes amis, it’s
spacious and has a medium sized
dance floor in the rear. The bar is
most TASTEFULLY
DECORATED TO REFLECT
THE SEASON OR THE
HOLIDAYS by the vety talented
Mr. M. who once advised me
that he doesn’t like his name in
print, so initials only this time.
Although the crowd is mostly
older, 30 and on as compared to
other bars, the friendly am
biance, the tastefully decorated
bar, and the really friendly
bartenders, makes anything
possible. JUST ABOUT
ANYONE AT ONE TIME OR
MORE THAN ONCE GOES TO
TRAVIS DURING A VISIT OR
OVER THE WEEKEND. So you
never quite know whom you
might see or meet. THIS IS ONE
OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE
THINGS ABOUT THIS BAR TO
ME, YOU KNOW WHOM YOU
CAN COUNT ON, BUT YOU
NEVER KNOW WHO MIGHT
BE THE EVENINGS SUPRISE!
In earlier times I met quite a
variety of people from all age
race, creed and colors at the
FABULOUS FRIENDLY LITTLE
TRAVIS as I like to call it.
lKAVIS was opened on JULY
30, 1973 and during the 7 days
preceeding MARDI GRAS, will
be open 24 HOURS EACH DAY.
I forgot to MENTION ONE
OTHER BARTENDER THERE,
GLENN. I highly recommend
TRAVIS as a’ place to visit and
meet people. It’s the kind of
place where you can usually talk
to your neighbor and the music
box doesn’t roar out the sound
of human voices. Just a couple
of doors away, at 820 N.
RAMPART ST., is another much
smaller version of TRAVIS,
CALLED TRAVIS II. There, also
always seasonally redecorated
very beautifully by, I believe the
same professional artist, can be
found the one and only MISS
BRADLEY ANN, holding court
over the cash register and the
booze and mixing a similar
knockout version of the TRAVIS
COCKTAIL, always at standard
prices. No,t,oply ^oes this lit£U
entime cabaret feature 4 MISS

The evening began with i

exciting and unique outfits.

any time an impromptu sing

TRAVIS II was born on Jan. 1,

BRADLEY ANN, AS THE
GODDESS OF GOOD DRINKS,
one year old. HAPPY BIR
THDAY TTII!
PLACES TO VISIT:
THE APPLE BARREL,
1940 DAUPHINE ST. NEW
ORLEANS' LA. One of the most
charming little sandwich -
luncheon bistros to open in a
long time is the APPLE
BARREL. Owners, ELLEN &
4 ELLEN, yes, two ELLENS,
opened this really popular little
place on Oct. U> 1975. Not yet a
year old, I highly recommend a
visit to this cleverly decorated
small restaurant. Brightly
colored burlap sacks decorated
the high ceiling, and each table
is a bright colored old foot pedal
sewing machine housing. Plants
in each window; and the nicest
.young entrepreneurs in the
FAUBERG MARIGNY section (a
short walk out of tire FRENCH
QUARTER). The menu is written
on a large blackboard in chalk
each day and features many local
favorities. The place lunches
have a creole touch and they
serve a very good po-boy, a local
version of a large sandwich on
french bread. Not even a year old
yet, they’ve become a little
famous for their bread pudding.
Hours are 11 a.m. till 8:30 p.m.
Closed on Mondays and major
holidays only. It reminds me of a
really charming place such as
you one time found in the
.Greenwich Village section of
Manhattan, but no more. ONLY
here in New Orleans. I highly
recommend you patronize the
APPLE BARREL. A delightful
experience! And good creole
french - local type cooking.

says that the CABARET, 728 N.

major facelift. THE CABARET is
. actually 4 bars in one; but the
.main bar, the one at the street

renovation-revamping-job done

larger than the present one. Also
changes resulting in a disco-

CIAF (CAMP INTELLIGENCE
AGENCY FEATURETTE)
A serious and lovely
wedding was recently held at the
MCC in New Orleans. The Rev.
Joel Kauhl performed the
ceremony, as bride SHELBY, in
a beautiful white wedding gown,
was quietly and seriously
wedded to groom BILLY,.in late
December of this year. The very
talented LADY DEAN sang the
LORD’S PRAYER as about 80
people were witness to this
joining together to two souls and
bodies. A very festive reception
was held at th e CABARET BAR,
after the wedding entourage
went on a car honking and
hooting cruise through the
streets of the FRENCH
QUARTER. This reporter
regrets being unable to attend,
but extends all good wishes for a
long and happy life together!
Best Man was DON, and MAID
OF HONOR, MISS PEACHERS.
The LADY DEAN, Marie,
Mother, and MISS JOYCE went
in drag to several bars and
business establishments after
hearing of the fire which locally
burned out a TOYS FOR TOTS
endCacor, and collected about
$150.00 from the gay com
munity. GOSSIP has it that they
were refused entrance at very
few places, but were shocked to
get the PERSONA NON
GRATA treatment from the
doorman at THE BOURBON
PUB. I have been unable to
verify this story from anyone
concerned, but what news I have
been able to gather leads me to
believe that NEITHER GERRY
NOR TEX, owners of THE
BURBON PUB, were aware of
this problem. I sincerely believe
that had they been aware, not
only would the people have been
tilowed entrance, but they
probably would have offered a
contribution. Anyway, it was a.
very thoughful idea of Lady
Dean, Mother, Marie and Miss
Joyce, and I think that these
camments should settle the
scandal -of the non-admittance
thing. CONGRATULATIONS TO
LARRY D. on becoming NEW
MANAGER OF THE
CABARET,. Good luck with
tour new job!
